I'm guessing that Mario realized he wouldn't win AI or even be a finalist, so he thought he may as well leave on his own instead of being voted off. This way, in his mind, and the minds of his fans, there's always the thought that he would've won had he stayed. And if he's doing that, he may as well try to weasel out of the contract he signed to try to get a better deal somewhere else. I understand what people are saying about the terms of the 19E contract not being favorable to the performers compared to the industry standards, but the people on AI would not have big-time recording contracts or be "stars" in any sense of the word without 19E/Fox. 19E/Fox, however, could still have a highly rated show without any one of them. I don't blame Clay for trying to get a better deal, but he wouldn't be where he is wihout AI - no way, no how. I don't think Clay got taken advantage of. No one wanted to sign him to a recording contract before he was on AI. Mario kind of reminds me of these high school basketball players who give up a college scholarship to go into the NBA draft. And I don't mean the great players like Kobe or LeBron, I mean the guys who you see crying on draft day because nobody picked them and they've blown their chance to play in college. They get an inflated opinion of themselves and everyone around them just feeds into it so they think they are good enough for the NBA. That's Mario. He's not that good, and he's not going to be a star. He's OK, and that's about it. He would have been much better off sticking it out with AI, just like those basketball players would've been better off taking the college scholarships.

I've been re-watching the Mario performances, and I'm really going to miss him. He was always one of my favorites, and I had expected him to be in the top 2. It's kind of prophetic that Simon once told him "You don't need us."

Personally I don't see anything exceptional about Mario. As for Simon's "You don't need us"... What Mario REALLY needs is to keep his fan base. Those people who are actually BUYING CDs. And for Mario it will not be easy IMO. | |

If Mario is actually planning to do what it seems, then there's absolutely no rationalization that'll redeem him, in my eyes. 19E's contracts are restrictive, everyone knows that, but look at what they do for these people. I'd be eternally grateful to a company that allows me to make millions while doing something I love. If a singer doesn't want to be bound to the AI contract, then he/she has to try and earn fame the hard way. That means going through everything that all the 10-20% contract artists went through. Mario is cheating 19E into giving him free publicity. If you consider this a "smart business move" then you have no grounds on which to criticize 19E's contract either. If Mario is allowed to be a weasel, then Simon Fuller should be allowed to do likewise. Idols make what they deserve anyway; I have yet to see an idol good enough to deserve the kind of money that artists like Bruce Springsteen and Norah Jones make. What Mario is doing, or supposedly doing, is just plain sleazy. If he thinks he deserves more than the chance American Idol is giving him, then he needs a reality check. On top of that, if he does get his way, the chances of him being successful are slim to none. There's a reason why people like Ashlee Simpson and Vanilla Ice never actually get anywhere in the recording industry. It takes great passion in music to become a truly great artist. It really annoys me that I have to slug it out in med school for 2 more years and an additional 2 in residency before I get the chance to make a fraction of what these starlets will make. Same goes for anyone else in any other career path. None of the Idols should be complaining in my opinion. :phhht EDIT: I'm also a bit shocked by how most Mario fans seem to support his decison. He smiles his way through the top 24, pleading for fan votes, and then bolts with no passing thought of any of his previous fans. I could never bring myself to buy a CD from someone who would do something so classless. Unless he picks up a guitar and starts sounding like Eric Clapton... Even then it might be hard. ![]()

Latest Mario/AI news culled from various sources on the internet: 1. He hired Clay Aiken's lawyer. Apparently, Clay hired this lawyer to cancel or nullify his management / merchandise contract with 19 entertainment and be independent. 2. Simon Fuller sold 19entertainment already this week. 3. Mario has cut a single included in an Argentinian album (that's weird) 4. That "sucess" has finally gotten in his head when he 'forced' his way into a private room where the Simpson sisters (Ashley and Jessica) were hanging out. Rumor has it he told the sisters that "I know how you feel about fame" stuff and asked if he could take a picture with them. He asked 4 times, they said no the same number of times. Any comments?

I applaud Mario for getting out before he was owned and controlled. NO ONE has happily -- and long-term -- benefitted from the American Idol/19 hold! Not even Kelly! She got out as soon as she could. I cannot believe that, after REALLY watching and investigating the bad experiences of past contestants/winners, ANYONE would give their life to the horrors of an American Idol life. If you personally know (and care about) any of the prior casualties, you'll agree that a modicum of success with American Idol is the curse of death!

August of 2004 -- Mario auditions for American Idol in Las Vegas. January 26th America gets it's first look at Mario when his audition is broadacast on AI4. February 16th -- Mario is named to the Final 24. March 8th -- the "Worlds of Change" CD is re-released March 9th -- Mario voted into the Top 12 March 11th -- Mario quits AI4 You have to admit that this may have been his plan all along. It is possible that Mario never intended to go all the way with AI4 but just did it for the publicity.

Maybe this will cause AI to change how they operate and have contracts on anyone who accepts going to hollywood? When you think about it. Mario's decision is a bit selfish. AI invests a lot into these no name people to make them look good and I think they at least expect you to stay around. Oh well. He was just aight for me I guess.
