World Idol 1/1/04: I'm The King Of The World!

It is that time, boys and girls…time to find out who won the inaugural World Idol competition. After the same intro as last week, our hosts Ant & Dec come out onto the stage to welcome us to the show. Thankfully, Dec has gotten rid of his Mafioso wannabe suit from last week. However, do the two of them have to wear matching suits this time around? Honestly, it makes them look like they are in their boarding school uniforms or something. Anyway, the pair welcome us to "the biggest show on the planet" (According to the US ratings at least it's far from that. But, I digress…), and then they bring out the 11 "Idols" competing for the title (Thank goodness Alexander covered up his pencil-thin arms, and what is that dress Kelly's wearing?). After that, we see a brief recap of last week's Performance Show, and then it's time for the first commercial break of the evening.

We come back from the break, and it is time for the results! No, it is not. Taking a cue from the American version of the show, these people are going to put announcing the winner off as long as possible. Instead of getting to the results, it's time for our first "Special Guest" of the evening! Ant & Dec say that she was a member of the most successful girl band of all time. What's this? The Supremes are going to be on World Idol? Diana Ross??? No, my mistake. It is not Miss Ross. It's Victoria Beckham, formerly known as "Posh Spice" from The Spice Girls. Oh, silly me. I thought they were talking about a real singer. My mistake. Anyway, the camera pans over the other stage, which has started to revolve around and reveal Mrs. Beckham to us. When the stage comes to a complete stop, we see her in a satin evening gown seated in a high-backed chair. It doesn't stop there, though, as Miss Thing's got her legs straddled over one of the arms of the chair. Um, honey, this is not a photo shoot for Hustler magazine; it is World Idol. Anyway, the music starts, and Victoria begins to <s>sing</s> lip synch her way through her song "Let Your Head Go". She <s>sings</s> lip synchs very badly, and the music is so loud that it drowns her (pre-recorded) voice out. As a result, I'm not able to tell if she even has a good voice. Wait a minute…maybe that was the plan all along. Anyway, she continues to <s>sing</s> lip synch, and I cannot help but notice that, while she is dressed to the nines in a satin gown, her backup dancers look like they came straight out of South Central. The song soon ends (thankfully), and Victoria engages in some light-hearted banter with Ant & Dec before making her exit. Before heading to the next commercial break, we see a montage of some really bad auditions by people who apparently thought they were trying out for Solid Gold and not one of the various Idol programs.

We return from the break, and it is time for the results! Nope, not quite yet, punkin'. We get to have another musical performance from another "Special Guest". The big difference is that this time, the "Special Guest" actually lives up to that moniker. It's Sir Elton John! A band accompanies him, and he sings a song I am not readily familiar with (maybe it is his new single?). Anyway, he sounds great, but he does not talk to the hosts after he is done. Rather, we get a video plug for the third season of American Idol. After that, it is time for yet another commercial break.

We come back from this break, and it's time for the results! No, really it is! Here is how the results will work. We will get the results of the voting from each participating region. That region's contestant will automatically get the most points allowed (12). After that, the points will be distributed starting with 10 points for the person in 2nd place (or 1st place if you do not count the "home" contestant) all the way down to 1 point for the contestant in last place. All results are announced in reverse order. Our first stop is the United Kingdom. Their results are as follows: Jamai, Alexander, Alex, Diana, Ryan, Guy, Heinz, Peter, Kelly, and Kurt. So, Kurt wins the UK (if you don't count Will Young's automatic 12 points). Next up is Belgium. That country's results are: Diana, Ryan, Guy, Jamai, Alex, Will, Alexander, Heinz, Kelly, and Kurt. Wow…Kurt is 2-for-2. Up next is Australia. The folks from Down Under voted this way: Alexander, Jamai, Alex, Diana, Ryan, Will, Peter, Heinz, Kelly, and Kurt. Hmm…is anyone else detecting a trend here? Up next is the USA. The Americans cast their votes as follows: Alexander, Jamai, Alex, Ryan, Will, Guy, Peter, Diana, Heinz, and, yes, Kurt. What surprises me most about the US results is how high Diana placed. I guess that, in the end, most people were able to get past the hacking sound she made as she sang and looked at the quality of her voice (which I thought was very good). Speaking of Diana, the Pan-Arab region follows, and their results are: Jamai, Guy, Will, Kurt, Kelly, Peter, Alex, Heinz, Ryan, and Alexander. Wow…Kelly and Kurt both took a bit of a beating in the Pan-Arab region. After those results, it is time for our next commercial break.

We come back from the break, and it's time to get the rest of the results. Up next is Poland, and their results are as follows: Diana, Ryan, Jamai, Alexander, Guy, Heinz, Will, Kelly, Peter, and Kurt. Sheesh…yet another country where Kurt finishes ahead of Kelly. Should we just go ahead and give the World Idol crown to Kurt? Oh, no…we do still have five more countries to hear from. Next up, we head back to Europe to get the results from Germany. They are: Jamai, Guy, Ryan, Peter, Will, Diana, Heinz, Alex, Kelly, and Kurt. The most surprising thing here to me is the high placing for Alex from Poland. We stay in Europe and go to Holland next. The Dutch cast their votes as follows: Diana, Heinz, Alex, Alexander, Ryan, Guy, Peter, Will, Kelly, and Kurt. Yes, Kurt wins again. I am beginning to think the writing is on the wall, but we are not quite done yet. We head north to Norway to get the results from Kurt's home country. They are: Alexander, Diana, Guy, Jamai, Alex, Heinz, Will, Ryan, Peter, and Kelly. Ant & Dec try to instill a bit of drama by saying that the Norwegians gave the most points possible (aside from Kurt's automatic 12 points) to his "main rival", Kelly. However, judging by the look on Kelly's face, I think she has already done the math in her head and realizes that it is all but over. The only way she could win at this point would be if she finished eight spots ahead in the final country. However, do any of us think that is really going to happen? We still do need to reveal the votes from South Africa, though, so we head there next to get our last set of results. The South Africans voted this way: Diana, Alexander, Alex, Jamai, Guy, Peter, Ryan, Kelly, Will, and Kurt. With those results revealed, Ant & Dec state what has become the obvious by this point—Kurt Nilsen has won the first World Idol competition! Though they only show the top five point totals on the show, they are like this:

Kurt 106
Kelly 97
Peter 83
Heinz 80
Will 72
Ryan 62
Guy 56
Alex 55
Diana 45
Alexander 45
Jamai 36

Kurt heads over to talk to Ant & Dec, and he is genuinely surprised by the results. I'm not sure why he is so shocked, though. He did give an excellent performance last week, and he got rave reviews from the judges (well, those comments that we did see, anyway). In spite of that, though, he does seem genuinely surprised that he won. He closes the show by reprising "Beautiful Day", the song he sang last week, and, as he finishes the song, the end credits start to roll.

Well, that's it. The first World Idol competition is history. Congratulations to Kurt for a job well done. Will there be a second World Idol competition featuring the "Velvet Teddy Bear" himself, Ruben Studdard? I guess only time will tell. Until then, don't forget…American Idol 3 starts in just over two weeks!

thanks for the recap, lobie! i didn't get to catch the show and i was in a panic that i had missed performances, but your recap filled me in just fine and it looks like all i missed was the shocked look on kelly's face when she lost to kurt and a reprise of "beautiful day" which i heard last week.

thanks again!

Thanks for the compliment, Sher. I don't know that Kelly was "shocked" so much as that she had just resigned herself to the outcome about halfway through the results.

I guess it doesn't surprise me. Americans just like the exotic middle eastern sound that puzzles them (as proven by the latest Milkshake song, Sting's Desert Rose etc.).
We Euros like rock (Peter from Belgium), even though he was grilled by Simon, who probably doesn't care about alternative music anyway...
And in the arabic world the taste for music is again very different. Those who experienced Greece, Turkey or even more southern regions will know...

I was really glad that Kurt won. He sang better than Bono himself (even though he does look like a troll )!!! I don't know why he was so surprised. The people voted, and I enjoyed seeing Kelly's ice queen "what the hell is going on here, I'm not winning" face. I think Ruben should have been there instead.

That couldn't happen, because all the participants were the winners from their country's first season.

If there's a World Idol 2, my guess is that Ruben will be our representative.

I enjoyed Will’s facial expressions the most out of all the contenders. His exaggerated expressions not only showed me that he was playing around and having fun, they showed me that he is very comfortable with himself and his career. I admire that quality, especially in someone that has been thrust into the entertainment industry.

Congratulations to Will and all the WI contenders.

In the U.S., some of the the AI and AI2 winners have participated in events such as the Christmas special and tour.

Have other idols winners done the same? Besided recording have they toured or done commercials, etc?

Loved the lip synch comments Lobeck!
I was pointing out (bitching, complaining) to my husband how HORRIBLE that lip synching was. Did she even rehearse ?! At least if you are going to lip sync..shouldn't your lips, you know, be in SYNC with the music???
OY!

I too did not think Kelly looked pissed off so much as either bored... or resigned as you mentioned in your recap.

Thank you for the recap, have been looking forward to it all day.

I am thrilled for Kurt :0)
