Here's something to kick around and discuss...
While the quality of the contestants on this show unarguably sharply increased (I'd say by at least a power of three) the moment they opened the show up to playing musical instruments, there's been a flip side to this.
We get people like Andrew (and to my mind also Casey), who arguably "hide behind their instruments".
It made me start to think about whether or not there's some middleground. To add to the same "testing" process Idol supposedly pushes them through by making them do things like sing different genres.
How about this... introduce one show of the main part of the season where instruments are verboten. Make it a very loose theme week so as not to add to the burden.
Thoughts? I mean there's probably just as good an argument that its just as unnecessary in a sense as the theme weeks are, since in their inevitable careers they WON'T be singing different genres, or ditching their instruments if they don't want to. But if the show IS intent on this "jump through the hoops" setup, then why not? If the hoops have to be there, at least vary them a bit.
