I also never said modern songs were the issue. I think modern songs are just as bad as the songs they'll be singing tonight. Instead of picking a decade, they need to do what they did on American Idol and pick a genre, which allows more choices than a decade ever would.

Furthermore, the song list still would probably need to undergo a major make-over. I've been in the "pagent" business for a very long time. It's really not as hard as it sounds.
Oh I understand, and I agree with you. I think genres would be much better.

It says plain-out on the site it's music from 1970. Actually, there were a lot of good songs from the 70's, and I'm hoping the Jrs. will pick appropriate ones and appropriate attire (*cough* Thompsons and Chantel*). I'm hoping someone will do "Band Of Gold".

Genres would be so much cuter... They would also give America a chance to hear the finalists sing different types of music.

mattmetcalf- Ss turn back the hands of time from grease 2? haha...

I'm just looking at the Billboard top 40 for 1970. I don't remember a lot of the lyrics but I think some of these songs may show up:

    ABC
    Ain't No Mountain High Enough
    Big Yellow Taxi
Breaking Up Is Hard to Do
Bridge Over Troubled Water (this has Chauncey written all over it)
Come Saturday Morning (kind of song Danielle might sing)
Everything Is Beautiful (if this doesn't show up they couldn't get the rights)
Fire and Rain (Canyon will sing...oh wait. nevermind)
Gimme Dat Ding (ok, nobody will really sing this and it would be a lousy choice, but if someone would, i'd laugh)
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
Hi-De-Ho (would be interesting to hear AJ tackle this)
I'll Be There (another softer song for Chauncey)
If I Were Your Woman (will one of the more mature singers sing this in front of Gladys?)
The Long and Winding Road (anyone willing to do a Beatles song?)
Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma (someone joked about this song, but I can see Jordan doing it)
O-o-h Child (i'm finding too many softer harder to sing songs)
Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head

Getting late. Only skimmed the last part of the list. Not a lot there that kids should sing. Especially the energetic songs have inappropriate lyrics. Gonna be tough choices.

Wow mattmetcalf. I was writing my list while you posted yours. Great minds.... I think we agreed on four. Several on your list I almost included (your Carpenters and Beatles choices).

I think that it is really hard to get the rights to Beatles songs

Oh yeah. Doesn't Michael Jackson own the rights to most of them now? Probably hard to get rights to Jackson 5 songs too.

How do you know that Matt???? Inquiring minds want to know. But still, Jackson 5 is in a different league (and cheaper) than the Beatles.
