It was stupid of him to quit, leave after 1 season. Not smart at all.

What's with Ryan this season? He's acting like a young pup who is challenging the alpha male for leadership. I don't find his little confrontations with Simon funny or interesting. Just uncomfortable and makes Ryan look bad.

I'd guess it's a combination of Simon leaving (and knowing that without Simon there will be no American Idol) and having a thing for a contestant. I think he and Simon are friends (or used to be) and he's hurt over the decision to leave. It's very clear that they no longer are. I don't think this is scripted, at all and it appears to have come to a head when Ryan got in Simon's face over the non-comments he made about Michael.

It IS very uncomfortable to watch as was Ryan's obvious interest in Didi with the way he kept touching her and fawning over her and the way she kept trying to not be too obvious about trying to get away. Creepy.

Just my uneducated guess and I could be way off base and it's all scripted and I fell for it *shrugs* but I do think that Ryan is going too far on many counts this season and he's made the show icky for me.

In the past, I would have said the banter between Ryan and Simon was scripted, all done with a wink wink nod nod attitude.

Now, it's just old. Like when Randy starts off with a "booooo" when Simon is introduced.

    All very YAWN inspiring.

Well from that encyclopedia site "on Celebrity Fit Club that he spoke about his reasons for leaving stated his departure was due to the terrible way they treated the young contestants on the show, staging the fights between the judges and reshooting contestants with producer-provided, glycerin tears in their eyes. He went on to say that leaving the show was a mistake. However, Dr. Ian K. Smith, one of the doctors on the panel, reminded Dunkleman that acting according to one's values is never a mistake. "

There was also another female judge (spanish), who was chosen on season 3 but left for the same reasons.

At the end of the day, money isn't everything but yes, i agree on why he would feel depressed

I would think that some of Ryan and Simon's past "tiffs" were scripted, but there is definitely unscripted hostility from Ryan this year. He's being a little bitch!

What was with Ryan last night??? He was uncharacteristically "off". The tongue comment with Adam and the Dunkleman comment were just not Ryan. He almost seem hyper and not connecting to the show at all

I'm sure the Dunkleman co-hosting joke (referring to Ryan's Season One co-host that quit/was fired) went over the heads of most viewers, but I was there thinking "Uh.. OK. That's weird, but..." then Ryan nervously laughed if off.

We're not the only ones puzzled. From today's Washington Examiner:

Seacrest's Brian Dunkleman joke backfires, spurs rumors 'American Idol' host was drunk

Also, it seems that Ryan has inadvertently kicked off a "Bring Dunkleman Back" movement on Twitter.

And on the subject of Seacrest ditziness, what was with the slow dancing with Michael Sarver during Tim Urban's performance? T Urban was almost having an actual moment there, and the director switches to an overhead long shot of Ryan going all DWTS in the aisle.

And for even more Ry-Ry coverage, check out Adam Vary's report from last night's studio broadcast:

'American Idol': Ryan completely loses his everlovin' mind on the scene of Top 9.2 performance night

Update: According to Vary, that was not Michael Sarver dancing with Ryan (as Ryan said on air) but one of Lee Dewyze's friends.

I talked about this in the performance thread. It was incredibly unfair for the producers and Ryan to take the focus away from Tim while he was singing. This is still a contest, after all, and fairness requires that all contestants be treated the same. I can't imagine the producers would cut to a dancing Ryan while Ruben, Clay, Jordan Sparks or Adam Lambert was singing. As TopCat updated, Ryan was actually dancing with a friend of Lee's, not Sarver. So that's worse. A friend of a competing contesant (Lee) gets to help upstage Tim with Ryan.

"Tons of surprises, but it wouldn't be 'American Idol' without it, would it?" Cowell told MTV News. "At the end of the day, I could go out and find 12 great singers, but that's kind of boring. The fact that there's people there who shouldn't be there makes it 'American Idol.' "

And Why did Ryan think it was okay to introduce Tim as Turban? If Tim wants to define himself with a cutsie name that is up to him, but when introducing a performer Ryan should give them the consideration not to give a silly nickname.

And when introducing Casey... Ryan looked so childish as he bent over to the women and said Oh Casey is so sexy... or something to that effect...

Come on Ryan I really am a fan of yours but you were out of it last night.
