That has always been the case. Nothing new on the length of the season, the new is the way the age brackets.

Yes I see they have an over 22. It just seems long to me, oh well, I can watch the final 10 and decide. I have no idea who Glover is though

The age brackets are very interesting and the biggest change to the format. It looks like they come out of Green Mile, then form the brackets (hopefully there are enough in each bracket to justify the length of the show) and we vote on each bracket when they perform. From there they will take the top 16 out of the highest vote getters from each bracket, correct? Then after one more voting performance, the top twelve are revealed and we move into the normal one elimination per week until the finals get set up in May.

Is this how you understand it?

That's how it reads to me. I wonder why they're doing this... did we have too many in one age bracket last year?

Perhaps when they looked back over the seasons since they dropped the age to 15, they saw an inequity when it came to voting or something. This way you can compare apples to apples in the range of experience and voice development. It also gives those in the older bracket more notice when this may be their last chance at Idol.

Maybe they wanted to give another chance to people who didn't make it in the past, but who had aged out.

I don't think they want anything to do with anything that resembles X Factor. That show has really tanked, especially this year, & has yet to produce a star of any renown.

The NY Times has a pretty good article, if anyone is interested:
