    Girls song choices.

    1. Ta-Tynisa Wilson – “Only Girl (In The World)” by Rihanna
    2. Naima Adedapo – “Summertime”
    3. Kendra Chantelle – “Impossible” by Christina Aguilera
    4. Rachel Zevita – “Criminal” by Fiona Apple
    5. Karen Rodriguez – “Hero” by Mariah Carey (sung half in Spanish)
    6. Lauren Turner sings “Seven Day Fool” by Etta James (Jully Black’s version)
    7. Ashton Jones – “Love Over Me” by Monica
    8. Julie Zorrilla – “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson
    9. Haley Reinhart – “Fallin” by Alicia Keyes
    10. Thia Megia – “Out Here On My Own” from Fame
    11. Lauren Alaina – “Turn on the Radio” by Reba McEntire
    12. Pia Toscano – “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders

I should add, that from what I read this morning Pia tore it up!

I think those are actually pretty good choices, the girls should all do well. I'm a little concerned about Thia since she's already fighting a losing battle, not sure that song is the right choice and I can already hear the judges saying she should have sang something more age appropriate.

OK....just read some reviews of their performances. So maybe I'm wrong and they aren't good choices after all. I don't know, when I read the songs they just seemed to be the sort of songs almost each of the girls would sing.

They sent all the interesting girls home already. All that's left are cookie cutter pretty-girl types with good - but similar voices. Not much diversity going on here.

I'm casting my vote for the girl who cleans toilets. She at least has an interesting story and could use the gig. I don't think I could care any less about any of the others.

    ---

My theory about Idol has always been - and remains so today - that the producers/judges know who they want to win from the very first auditions - at least top two. This is "Tier 1". Then, they build "Tier 2" which is basically a buffer around Tier 1. The "just in case" contestants.

Then, they create "Tier 3" to round out the Findal 10-12 which is comprised of the sacrificial lambs...folks good enough to justify their presence in the F10-12 but not in the same league as Tier 1. The disparity in talent is enough to make America vote this group off first leaving the Tier 1 chosen ones safe. Tier 2 is just filler between Tier's 1 and 3.

I agree with your theory. What's fun to watch is when America votes in a Tier 3 contestant over and over and they become final 2 or even win which has clearly happened many times in the 9 years.
I usually like the Tier 3 people over the chosen ones (Kris over Adam)

What is up with these girls? What boring song choices! Rachel and Pia's songs are the only interesting songs to me on that list, and I think Julie will do a good job with that Kelly song. (one of my faves from her)

That would be stupid of them since the character in "Fame" was in high school when she sang it.

Thank you. I couldn't understand how the criticism could be fair (if indeed it was real) since Fame was about HS in the first place.

Personally I find these humane mouse traps rather ineffective. Better to lay down some glue and when you hear the critter scream you take a shovel to his head.

I'm not Harmony, but maybe by "age appropriate" they meant a more current song? That is how I read the comment.

Thank you, that was what I meant. Age appropriate as in something Selena, Demi, or any of the Disney kids would sing that is current.

Its just really sad when people choose to dislike a person because they think someone they like was cut because of them. Like whoever you like, dislike who you like, vote for who you want, but don't blame them for someone else not being included. Only the judges know why they pick the way they do, and in the end its still as much about casting a reality show as it is a singing competition.
Agree on your last sentence, they are choosing contestants not because they are that good but because they needed to cast a certain type (i.e. Country singer). Scotty over John Wayne, sure, but neither is that good. Scotty even flubbed his Hollywood (as is the case wtih Tatynisa who still made it despite the fact) performance and his Las Vegas performance was mediocre at best. Colton, OTOH, was consistent all throughout. Looks like they also want diversity...whites, blacks, asians, latinos, mixed-race, all well represented.
