Likewise, comments about Lee being way off-key are fair and point out a technical issue that is not a matter of taste.

Question for you. You're not the only one to say this, but I haven't noticed it so I have a technical question about this statement. You say he is off-key. Is he generally sharp or flat on his notes. The reason I ask is because I know from experience that I tend to hear people who are flat, but don't notice it if they are sharp. For some reason apparently sharp doesn't sound discordent to me like flat does. When he was singing his first song last night my daughter commented that he was off-tune, yet I wasn't thinking it at that time at all. She must be more gifted in that area than I.

It amazes me how much faith people making those claims put into the sound system Idol uses . . . especially when the judges themselves say what they hear in the studio doesn't sound like what the viewers hear at home.

Even the most skilled performers can hit a clunker now and then, so unless Lee is singing through his noise ("nasal is a singing style" ) or going through puberty like Peter Brady (when it's time to change!), if the singing sounds good to you, sit back and enjoy. If it doesn't sound good, I'm sure your remote has a mute button.

I haven't that much this season, but I voted a bunch of times for Crystal. I wasn't a Crystal fan before, but she rocked this finale. She deserves the crown... but unfortunately she'll probably just come up short.
Honestly, its Allen over Lambert all over again.

It proves that Bland is where this show inevitably leads now. Really, from Taylor Hicks onwards its been true, with the possible exception of David Cook (and even he's a bit vanilla, for all that he's "a rocker").

Oh I disagree. I don't find Crystal to have anywhere near the charisma or voice that Adam had/has. And I do not find Lee bland at all. I love the bit of shyness that he has. It adds a bit of sex appeal to his performance.
Okay I love FORT's casino, but I really am not very good. If anyone wants to donate their FORT $$ I would gladly accept http://www.fansofrealitytv.com/forum....php?do=donate

I like both and think they both will do well in their respected genres. IMO Crystal has been the most consitent and had the best vocals of anyone on AI9 and probably should win. However, Lee has been getting better and better (except for last night) and has gain a huge following. I think Crystal is the more talented of the two and she proved it last night. Saying that, Lee's popularity will give him the win. I might like Crystal's voice better but probably would buy Lee's album before Crystal's because of the type of music she will make. I rather hear rock then folk. JMO

Pitch may be a technical issue, but how it factors in to one's enjoyment of music is relative. And keep in mind that pitch coming from a human voice is always relative. Synthesizers can produce perfect constant pitch, but the human brain and vocal chords can only come close. The question is how does Lee's singing make you feel? What does it communicate? Bob Dylan, (to use the extreme example) has an even looser relationship with pitch than Lee - but he influenced a generation. Some people will give Mr. Dewyze some wiggle room to get the warm, sincere performance that they enjoy.

Both. Lee sometimes throws his voice in the neighborhood of the right note, and hits a few quarter tones along the way, then hits the right one, then hits a few more tones on his way to the next note. It's a very loose style. It's a glass half full / half empty situation. Either you applaud that he hit the right note eventually, or you dismiss him for all the wrong notes along the way.

In the bigger singer vs. smaller singer, it's an apt comparison. However in other ways it's upside down. Last year Adam was the singer that you either loved or hated. This year that role is being played by Lee, as the discussion above shows. That polarization may play the same spoiler role this year for Lee that it did for Adam last year.

I think TopCat summed it well, but essentially Lee has been off the mark in all the note categories.

"Tons of surprises, but it wouldn't be 'American Idol' without it, would it?" Cowell told MTV News. "At the end of the day, I could go out and find 12 great singers, but that's kind of boring. The fact that there's people there who shouldn't be there makes it 'American Idol.' "

Sorry, Lee can't use the sound system as an excuse for his bad notes. There were too many other contestants who had consistenly good pitch throughout the season.

For Lee, this was not just "now and then." This was throughout entire songs, and it's not acceptable to me, even for a rocker.
