Full disclosure: Kris Allen had me in a puddle of tears last year with his rendition of this song - so I've got my skeptic's hat on as I watch these two take on this Oscar winning ballad. And I have to say, they are fine on it. They bring up the tempo, add the band, and do a fun power ballad trading lines. However, it leaves me empty. There is so much in this lyric, and they pretty much throw the words away. It feels like empty calories to me.

I was thinking about Kris' version of the song and for me Kris' success is that he wraps himself in the lyrics and melody of the song. I loved the duet though.

Thanks to Unk's usual Linkage, I just listened back to "I'm Alright" again, and I have to say... I'm less lukewarm on it on second listening. It grows on you quite a bit (at least Crystal's interpretation, not Kenny Loggins schmaltzy original).

That said, I'm still all too conscious of how messed up this show and its lame authorized song lists are.

I started the season really liking Lee - his voice, his style, and his genuineness made him one of my early favorites, despite the fact that he has consistently had some serious pitch problems. I figured this was partially due to nerves and could be addressed with autotune in the studio (yes, it's sad when singing on key is optional in a "singing competition"). However, over the past few weeks, he has lost something for me. His vocals are too forced and have turned into Nickelback impersonations, his pitch has not improved with experience, and his arrangements, quite frankly, stink! On my list, Lee has fallen to fourth place out of this bunch.

Crystal has remained good vocally - she has no pitch problems, but when she goes to that loud place, I really don't enjoy hearing what comes out of her mouth. I do think she is the best singer of the 4 remaining. I don't agree with Ellen and Kara that "I'm Alright" was better than the original. Her arrangement lost the quirk of that song that made it good to begin with.

Worst of the night: Lee and Crystal yelling "Falling Slowly" at each other - and I can't believe I'd ever have to put that beautiful song in a "worst" category. The arrangement, the shouting...it was sung with all the finesse of "I'm a Little Bit Country, I'm a Little Bit Rock & Roll." Shrapnel to my ears.

Casey's "Mrs. Robinson" was, well, just a little weird. It was a little too heartfelt, which I thought would be a good thing coming from Casey for a change, but not on this ditty. But, on a good note, Casey is branching out more and trying different things, and he is obviously talented - this was not horrible,...just strange. I'm glad Casey has made it this far - I think there is more to him artistically and musically that just hasn't been tapped yet.

Mike was okay - his vocals are always decent at the very least, and I may be in the minority (or maybe not - Mike is in the top 4), but I really like Mike's personality and don't find him phony or fake, as some seem to. He did fine on his solo, but the song deserved more time to start small and build, or that should have been done in the smushed down version more successfully. But overall, a good performance, and Mike has at least been consistent with good vocals throughout the season, whether you like his style and personality or not.

For me, the best performance of the night came from the unlikely pairing of Casey and Mike. Their harmonies were great, and Casey plays a mean Spanish guitar, not to mention the fact that they looked AMAZING! There was something a little John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson from "Pulp Fiction" about them, and it just worked for me on every level! Wasn't imagining something that fine coming from that duo, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Portia de Rossi. Pretty top shelf as women go too (although apparently she's a vegan--blech).

Ugh, what a night last night. At least I can't be upset that they cut into Glee--now there's a positive.

Thought Lee would've improved after his trial run with Jamie but, sadly, he didn't. His performance was just weak and I'm glad the judges called him out for it. That being said, I hope he makes it into the top 3.

Big Mike lost me at the beginning of his song with the off-key notes. I found I just couldn't get back into the song after that.

Crystal & Lee's duet -- one word -- sacrilege. Kris's version of Falling Slowly, as Kara would say, moved me last season-- so much so that I rented Once and even had DH watch it with me the second time. It was also the song that moved me from Adam's to Kris's camp last season and his (and the original) versions play often on my ipod. Maybe if I'd heard their version first, I wouldn't be so unhappy, but I felt they hacked it to pieces.

Casey, sad to say I tuned out halfway through it. It was good but not great. And I felt for him, with the whole Mrs. Robinson thing coming back. Note to Randy--repeating the same thing over and over again doesn't make it any funnier this time around. Enough already!

Crystal, good for her! She put her on twist on things and it sounded great. I love the original and I loved her version as well.

Casey & Mike did much better together than they did apart. I wonder who will be saved by this duet...

Sadly, this episode was like listening to Charlie Brown's teacher -- blah, blah, blah blah....until I heard -- DAUGHTRY will be on tomorrow night. Hooray, something to get excited about!!!!

In terms of Performance, all of these idol-hopefuls stink. They may be able to sing but each one of them just stands there with their feet planted. I remember last year when Adam and Allison did their duet they were bouncing all over that stage. It was fun to watch... this year is a snoozefest.

Slow Ride is a whole different type of song.

Well of course... but we haven't seen either of them move all season.

Best solo of the night: Casey. He performed an original version of "Mrs. Robinson" with strong vocals and wonderful instrument playing.

Both duets were very good. I noticed that Lee improved a lot with his pitch and pacing having Crystal to vocally guide him in their duet. Otherwise, Lee sucked as usual on his solo.

Mike is quite talented but a tad boring.

Crystal did a good job, but I've always hated that Kenny Loggins song.
