Re: How To Fix American Idol

I don't think they've toned down the backstories.
I hardly watch the show before they get to Hollywood, but I have seen, since then, all about Mike's new baby, Andrew's gang parents, Crystal's single mom status, etc. etc. etc.
I don't care that much about the backstories, but I do think they should, if they're going to use them, do them for all the contestants. Otherwise, the contestants who are being pimped always have an unfair advantage.
As far as the judges, I preferred when they had the 3 judges. Four is overkill and I would have preferred not to have "the average viewer" represented on the panel in the form of Ellen.

I agree with those who say limit the votes. Last night while watching DWTS, I was thinking that exact thing.

What is your opinion of doing it like DWTS - that 50% of the score is the public, and 50% the judges. That would help solve the problems of the really poor singers getting far.

One of the things that needed to be fixed was stopping the Paula nonsense, and that has happened. Last season, when she and Simon were so busy drawing on each other's faces and such that they couldn't pay attention to or be respectful to the contestants, it was disgraceful -

Kara jumped right into that spot. As soon as Ryan moves on to her turn, Kara turns to Simon and must make some gesture, rub or schoolgirl comment to him so as to elicit a response..

Here's one super-easy fix they could make: do not let Kara sit next to Simon. If they would just move her to the opposite end of the judges row it would eliminate most of the puke-inducing fawning and groping.

Take this survey to tell (presumably) the producers how you would fix the show.

I took this survey a few days ago! It was so much fun to give them a piece of my mind!

    1.) Fire Randy.
2.) Do away with Mentors. Or get REAL ones. If Jamie Foxx comes within 2000 feet of the set, shoot him full of buckshot.
3.) Fire Randy. (and heck, why not Kara too?)
4.) Do away with theme weeks. Just let them #&^ing sing what they are GOOD at.
5.) Fire Randy (and heck, why not Kara too? And Ellen while you are at it)
6.) Hire Tom Bergeron away from ABC and replace Seacrest. Or maybe even Dunkleman. Seacrest is just getting to be... too much.
7.) Fire Randy (and heck, why not Kara too? And Ellen while you are at it--and give all that money to Simon to BEG him to stay)
8.) Get rid of that "Aah ahh" song. Never liked it. From Day 1.
9.) Finale: Don't have a judges "save", instead have a "Judges Pick" for a finalist who can be anyone who was eliminated in the whole competition. Let ALL the finalists sing ONLY IN THEIR CHOSEN GENRE, so we get a real test of their talent. This allows someone to come back who was, lets say, booted in some stupid "Country week" because he or she was a rocker, but it also ensures the final test is more about commercial viability in their genre than the stupid winnowing down the rest of the show is. Also, make it a multi-part Finale over three nights, but make them ONE HOUR BLOCKS ONLY with no more than 2 performances from each Idoler each of the first two nights (the third night being the final results show). Why? Simple. So the call in voting is spread out and in reaction to different nights of performance. The one-hour cap on each night is so we don't have tons of the usual filler, and the 2 performances per night gives people a total of 4 Finale performances to judge from--a good but not excessive number for 2 nights of work.
10.) More backstage stuff about the actual training they do, and less Ford and Coke commercials.

    1) If we have to see all the auditions, then at least spend an equal amount of time on each contestant that makes the Top 24.

    2) If they are going to stick to themes, don't eliminate anyone for the first 5 weeks, then eliminate the bottom 5 all at once based on cumulative votes. At least 1 bad week wouldn't be the end for someone that doesn't deserve to go home.

    3) Limit voting...we are going to see cute guy after cute guy win this thing if they don't cut the tween females ability to keep the cuties around.

    4) Make it a cumulative vote & eliminate the bottom vote getter based on the seasons votes, instead of the weeks votes. I believe Siobhan would still be around.

    5) Get rid of the 4th judge. Replace Simon with someone with music industry creds, boot Kara & or The Dawg.

    6) Stop bringing on all these "hot" at the moment pop acts on results night. There are enough Idols on the market, that they should all be allowed to perform. Enough Flo Rida, Lady Gaga extravaganzas.
