I completely agree with your assessment of the girls. I'm not quite ready to write off the guys, however. Michael and Casey are in a position to move in to Idol territory depending on how they play out the theme weeks. Remember, at this time last year Kris was practically invisible and Adam looked talented, but probably too specialized and weird for the Idol demographic. There is a lot of ground to cover before (to steal Michael Slezak's phrase) "the Mariah Carrey wannabe sings".

But specifically as for Siobhan - I am definitely a fan. So far, she's my favorite.

Siobhan's story is interesting, e.g. basically being the mother to her 2 young sisters and I'm guessing not a lot of money.

I'm curious as to why her father is on disability?

I find Siobhan very intriguing. Her name, her looks, her way of speaking, everything. Don't want to know too much about her, in order to keep the mystique alive. Great vocalist. Hope she makes it to the top 3, at least.

I prefer the guys but there are two girls I really like, Siobhan and Didi. I doubt very much the f2 will be girls. I think they're quite weak this season although keeping Tim and Aaron watered down the talent in the guys.

Happy 20th birthday, Siobhan! And two days before St Patrick's day - how appropriate!

Nice article, except the writer has the part about already earning a spot on the tour wrong. Also, rumors swirling are that she will be singing Paint It Black. Nice photo of her & Lacey at the link.

Showering of support for Siobhan | CapeCodOnline.com

    A showering of support

In the weeks since she first took the "American Idol" stage, Siobhan Magnus has welcomed hundreds of messages from across Cape Cod, reminding her where she comes from.

But it took only a few words, passed on last week from one of her musical heroes, to show her where she's going, Magnus said yesterday in an interview with the Times.

Through a media contact, Magnus, a Marstons Mills native and one of the remaining 12 contestants on "Idol," received a message several days ago from Taylor Hanson, a singer in the rock band Hanson — one of her favorite musical acts.

"It basically said, 'We're really excited to hear that you're a fan,' ... and told me they were rooting for me," Magnus, 19, said yesterday as she left a rehearsal.

"It's baffling to think that these people that changed my life are contacting me, saying 'good job.' ... It's just the most shocking thing."

With each passing week, Magnus, who will compete tonight for a spot in the top 11, comes closer to her dream of a professional singing career.

As one of the remaining 12, she stands to earn thousands of dollars from appearances, recordings and royalties, and she has already secured a spot on the show's cross-country tour this summer with, hopefully, a full career of professional gigs to follow, she said.

"("American Idol") is one of the best platforms for a singer there ever was," said Magnus, one of 112,000 people across the country to audition for the latest contest. "It's the biggest advantage you could possibly have ... to get your name and your voice out there."

But it still involves some heavy lifting. The schedule — rehearsals, photo shoots, promotional events and your occasional interview with a hometown reporter — can be grueling. Magnus works for hours each day with a team of "Idol" staff and coaches to select her songs, determine the musical arrangement and fine-tune her voice.

To relax, she takes naps, listens to music: "But there's not a lot of free time for that sort of thing."

She's developed strong friendships with other contestants — competition and all — but they can't replace her friends and family back on the Cape, people she talks to "when I can."

It turns out it's Magnus' own inner voice she listens to in choosing her songs. With performances ranging from Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" to Aretha Franklin's "Think," Magnus has impressed the judges, even the notoriously stingy Simon Cowell, with her unorthodox selections.

"As much as it's important to take into consideration ... the judges' comments, more than anything else I have to listen to my gut feeling," she said. "If it feels right with me, that's what I go on more than anything else."

Speaking of feelings, what's it like to be standing there on stage?

"It's pretty scary," Magnus admitted. "You start to think too much about what's going on and how many people are watching ... but that's one of the reasons I did this. One of my favorite parts is that feeling you get right when you step out on stage."

Any hints on what she'll sing tonight?

Not a chance, although she did promise something "big" and "different."

Whatever it is, "it's going to be a blast," Magnus said. "Everything's getting more intense."

"All I can do is try my hardest to do my best," she said. "All I can do is hope my best is good enough to keep me here. ... The rest is out of my hands."
