Yes, these folks are looking for a career and they will have it. However, regardless of what they are looking to acquire from the show, the show always has been, and, most likely always will be, first and foremost a "reality" show. While it is in Idol's best interest that the winner be successful, they are most concerned with how many viewers they are drawing and how much $$ they are generating.
It is in their contract that "ABC has the right to change the vote". The whole bit with the accountant walking up with the sealed envelope is just a charade. It is a Reality Show, not a game show, so it is not subject to the same standards and practices...

You are painting a picture where, say, all Danny's fans can text, but Allison fans have to phone vote. But that is not the case. Both Danny and Allison's fans have the same opportunities, and they use them. Some vote by phone; some by text.

The contestants are on a level playing field as far as voting is concerned. It's the individual fan (like you and me) that are put on unequal footing. The person who has an unlimited AT&T text plan can make their hour of voting count for ten times more than the person who has to rely on the telephone. That is unfair, and as others have said, will lead to people not bothering to pick up the phone.

Adam, Kris, Danny, Allison, and all the rest had their mad texting fans, and their loyal phone voting fans.

Putting a cap on the number of votes accepted from one number, as is done in SYTYCD and DWTS, would even the playing field for the fans.

It would also change the dynamic of AI voting, in that instead of measuring both the number of fans (voting breadth) and the fans passion for their favorite (voting depth), it would switch to being only a head count of breadth of support. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it would be different, and would shape results. The probable outcome would be that contestants like Danny that have broad appeal would be favored, and candidates like Adam and Allison that have narrower, but more fervent supporters, would fall behind.

The problem, though, was that people who tried to vote by phone could not get through the phone lines. If you're going to rely on a system that offers different methods for people to vote, you need to ensure that all those systems function. They did not. The AI system is skewed toward the texters. Not all people in the US have unlimited texting plans.

I don't think that's true. Technically speaking, the law covers any "contests of knowledge, skill, or chance". They specifically define the term contests.
The term “contest” means any contest broadcast by a radio station in connection with which any money or any other thing of value is offered as a prize or prizes to be paid or presented by the program sponsor or by any other person or persons, as announced in the course of the broadcast.
I don't think any reality show aspect of AI prevents it from being covered in that category. It's definitely a contest that involves some skill, in which the winner gets prizes of value.

That is so true. But then, it's ALWAYS been true. (See Season 2: Ruben vs. Clay) Even if AI is ready to accept millions of incoming calls, local phone exchanges are swamped by everyone in town trying to use phone circuits at once. That's just the reality of telephone technology. The phone system assumes that everyone won't try and call at the same time.

Just curious, for those who vote by phone, are you callling from your cell phones, or your regular land lines? I know when I'm voting, I can always get thru on my land line, but never on my cell phone. Not that I didn't get busy signals, I did, but being persistant, I did get thru.... but NEVER on my cell.

    I'm in the Dallas area...

I voted using a land line. I have prepaid cell service and calls cost me 18 cents a minute. No chance I'm using on it on Idol voting. I didn't have any trouble getting through (voting for Kris). Not every call, but enough.

I used my cellphone and kept getting All circuits busy message. I did however get through 78 times with the use of redial to vote for Adam.

I didn't vote this year, but I have found in past years that my Idol vote calls on my cell phone are not counted towards my quota of minutes, even though I'm with T-Mobile, not AT&T.

sandy in sd it all depends on your plan. your idol vote calls didnt count towards your minutes because most likely your plan included unlimited nights. i do believe tmobile's unlimted nights are from 9pm to 6:59am. not to sure though. but i notice mines are "free" or not counted against my minutes during those times.
not my frickin fault. fine, my fault, i always get blamed anyways.
