I don't think it is media bias, but rather an interesting story about how power texting. Here's the story from the NY Times.

AT&T, one of the biggest corporate sponsors of “American Idol,” might have influenced the outcome of this year’s competition by providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting blocks of votes at parties organized by fans of Kris Allen, the Arkansas singer who was the winner of the show last week.

Representatives of AT&T, whose mobile phone network is the only one that can be used to cast “American Idol” votes via text message, provided the free text-messaging services at two parties in Arkansas after the final performance episode of “American Idol” last week, according to the company and people at the events.

There appear to have been no similar efforts to provide free texting services to supporters of Adam Lambert, who finished as the runner-up to Mr. Allen.

Since then, angry supporters of Mr. Lambert have flooded online chat boards with messages claiming irregularities in the competition’s voting.

Officials of Fox Broadcasting declined to discuss the situation. In a statement issued Tuesday, a spokesman for AT&T said, “In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested.”

Details of the voting support were first reported last week in an article in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Representatives of AT&T helped fans of Mr. Allen at the two Arkansas events by providing instructions on how to send 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button, known as power texts. Power texts have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show’s toll-free phone lines. The efforts appear to run afoul of “American Idol” voting rules in two ways. The show broadcasts an on-screen statement at the end of each episode warning that blocks of votes cast using “technical enhancements” that unfairly influence the outcome of voting can be thrown out.

And the show regularly states that text voting is open only to AT&T subscribers and is subject to normal rates.
Taking the article at face value, it probably isn't AT&T but rather a few AT&T employees who allegedly participated in the text ballot stuffing.

If they truly believe the validity of the story, it's not bias. Just because there are two viewpoints, it does not necessarily mean that each side is equally entitled to 50% of the attention. It might mean it, but not necessarily. The likelihood of being true and the validity of the arguments would really determine whether it's bias.

IMO, they are certainly sensationalizing the story, but I don't really think it's bias against Kris. The voting system for AI has been deeply flawed for many years, and this season was just a storybook perfect case that highlights some of those flaws. I think Kris was great, did an incredible job this year, and was a pleasure to watch, but I do think these people have valid points about the voting. Mind you, these points would have been valid even if Adam had won.

Eh, I think the headlines are just written to sell more papers (or "clicks", however the case may be). I think Kris will do just fine, and in any event, regardless of he's portrayed he's going to be a much bigger star post-AI than before! I wish both finalists the best. I really enjoyed the finale and the results show, in part because I knew the guys were enjoying it and in part because I know they will both be successful in the end. A lesson to us all in great sportsmanship!

My point in the bias is the awful, probably ONLY not so nice looking photo they use of him with the story, inferring that he is guilty as well

There is a blogger given prominent status on Yahoo who is very pro-Adam and who is calling him the "Real" American Idol, saying America made a "mistake", and accepting the vote rigging at face value. She also keeps running blogs with the picture of Kris showing shock and surprise that he won, inferring that even he knew he didn't deserve to win.

It's all sour grapes and shamefully geared toward creating an unfair sound bite against Kris and pro Adam for those with sound bite attention span for things AI related, and who won't have time or interest to investigate the full story.

Please don't take that to mean that all Adam fans are that mean-spirited, because we're not. I wish the best for Kris and congratulate him in his victory.

Hopefully, the statement released by AT&T & Fox at the Entertainment Weekly site will put all of this to rest. Some poor judgement by AT&T reps at a couple of voting parties...yes...but all involved said that was not impactful at all to the results.

I hope they drag AI through the ringer. I hope this will now make it one vote per phone line & 1 TEXT per line. The power voting this allows someone to cast thousands of votes in a few minutes without paying all the texting fees and frankly I hope it does taint the whole process so it will change.

I would like for them to change the voting system, because voting for four hours is a huge pain in the butt. But the deal is so profitable for TPTB, so I'd be surprised if they changed it.

Must disagree. You cannot do 1000s of votes in a few minutes. OBVIOUSLY, its faster than phoning but it definitely takes longer than a few minutes. I would say a good texter can register 1000 in shortly under one hour.

And yes I do pay fees - $40 a month for unlimited texting.
