Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Here are the radio play numbers for the week from USA Today. Just as an interesting aside, take a look at the song sitting at #9, this song is now almost 3 years old, yet it just won’t go quietly into the night.

Thanks to the good folks at Mediabase, the American Idol airplay chart is back and better than ever this week. You may remember I took a shot at doing this list by hand two weeks ago. Now, we've automated it somewhat, allowing us to do more and better things. For example, we've expanded our rankings from 50 to 100. We're measuring across all formats and including older songs as well as current ones, so you can see how often your favorite Idol song gets played on the radio. Once we get this running smoothly, I'm hoping to be able to tell you how much the songs move up and down the charts from week to week -- at least on the biggest records.

Davidcookhandout David Cook's smash, Light On, is the most-played song, with heavy spins at Top 40, Hot AC and Radio Disney formats. But right behind him is Kelly Clarkson with her new single, My Life Would Suck Without You, which enters as the second most-played Idol song. Daughtry's What About Now, Cook's Time of My Life and David Archuleta's Crush round out the top five.

While David Cook has the most-played song on the chart, he was only the fourth most-played Idol on radio last week. Daughtry topped that list, with eight songs in our top 100, followed by Kelly and Carrie Underwood. In all, there are 23 Idols on this week's chart.

    The full song list follows:

    1. David Cook, Light On (7699 spins)
    2. Kelly Clarkson, My Life Would Suck Without You (5716)
    3. Daughtry, What About Now (4849)
    4. David Cook, Time Of My Life (4098)

He is still working through some issues on how he wants to present the sales data. But, totals aren't official until Wednesday's when Soundscan figures it all out.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Here are some of the weekly sales & download totals from USA Today. It’s a mish mash so read carefully. By the way, Brian, the new guy, still hasn’t gotten permission from Soundscan to publish the sales of those Idols that have dropped from the Top 200.

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information – USATODAY.com

    Those sales don't suck

Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You makes its expected debut atop Nielsen SoundScan's Current Digital Tracks chart this week. According to a press release from her label, MLWSWY sold 279,605 downloads in its first week -- the third-biggest digital song debut ever for a female artist. For comparison, the next-highest debut belonged to U2. The group's Get On Your Boots sold only 58,000 downloads. (The song's sudden success has prompted 19 Recordings/RCA Records to move up the release of Kelly's All I Ever Wanted album to March 10.)

David Cook's Light On sold just over 49,000 (a 27 percent drop from the previous week's 68,000). Moving from 15 to 24 this week, Light On has cumulative sales of 642,000. Time of My Life sees a similar 27 percent drop, selling 10,000 downloads, off from 14,000 (total: 1.1 million). It drops out of the Top 100 to 140.

David Archuleta's Crush didn't take quite the hit Cook did. Archie's off just 17 percent, from 39,000 to 33,000, enough to keep a spot in the Top 40. Crush likely will pass this 1.5 million downloads mark this week: It's currently at 1.5 million. Meanwhile, A Little Too Not Over You, which re-entered the Top 200 last week with almost 10,000 downloads, drops from 143 to 169. This week's 8,000 sales bring the track's total to 75,000.

(Album-sales info after the jump ...)

For albums, David Cook drops four spots to 14 on SoundScan's list of top current albums. It sold 24,000, down a fifth from the previous week's 31,000 for a release-to-date total approaching 919,000. Cook's digital-album sales were off considerably more -- 54 percent -- as 7,000 sales turn into slightly more than 3,000, moving him from 7 on the Current Digital Albums chart to 25. On the bright side, he does pass the 100,000 digital-albums mark.

David Archuleta, on the other hand, sees a slight up-tick in sales for his album -- a 7 percent increase that brings him close to the 10,000 mark for the week and nudges him from 53 to 52 on the chart. His album's at 610,000 overall.

Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride also sold a few hundred more last week than it did the week before, moving slightly more than 7,000 units. Carrie drops a spot on the chart, from 69 to 70 (though she remains steady at 9 on the country chart), as her release-to-date total increases to 2.6 million.

With a 14 percent decrease, Jennifer Hudson drops 20 spots on the chart, from 57 to 77. It sold 7,000, down from 8,000, bringing her total to 576,000.

Daughtry gets a double-digit percentage increase, his self-titled album gaining 12 percent (and 3 chart spots, to 94). Last week's 6,000 sales bring him to 4.37 million total.

Finally, Kellie Pickler moves back into the Top 200 after falling out last week. A 26 percent increase means nearly 3,000 sales from the previous week's 2,000 -- enough to put Kellie at 194. (She's at 27 on the country chart.) She's now sold 164,000 copies of her sophomore disc

Update: Nielsen SoundScan just gave me a few other numbers for which some folks have asked. Jordin Sparks' album hasn't quite hit the million mark yet: With 2,000 sales last week, she's at 992,000. Carrie's Some Hearts sold 5,000 last week and has sold 6.7 million overall.

Here are a few more digital-track tallies:

Jordin Sparks, One Step at a Time: 12,000 downloads last week/1.2 million total

Carrie Underwood, Before He Cheats: 9,000/2.6 million

Carrie Underwood, Just a Dream: 13,000/602,000

    Daughtry, What About Now: 11,000/447,000

Kelli Clarkson, Since U Been Gone: 8,000/1.8 million

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Here is the radio data for the week. I like the way that Brian is handling all the new info. Now he just needs to convince Soundscan to let him expand the sales data.

This week's Idol airplay chart - Idol Chatter - USATODAY.com

As expected, Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You continues its meteoric rise, easily outdistancing David Cook's Light On to take over the top spot on this week's Idol airplay chart. Get used to have Kelly at Number One: With Cook's single having pretty much peaked, nothing else is even close to My Life Would Suck Without You, in terms of the number of spins.

Most of the rest of the Top 10 stays the same from last week, though Carrie Underwood's I Told You So edges past Jennifer Hudson's Spotlight to claim the 10th spot.

Nine new tracks appear on the chart this week. The first one comes with a caveat: Love Him Like I Do, from Ruben Studdard, Deitrick Haddon and Mary Mary should have been on last week's chart. Because it's listed differently than Ruben's solo records, we missed it in last week's tracking. (We're still getting the kinks worked out. Thanks for your patience.)

Taylor Hicks' What's Right Is Right enters the chart at 64, thanks in large part to play on KUMU-FM in Honolulu, Hawaii; WRSA-FM in Huntsville, Ala.; and WHLG-FM in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Four stations, including KWAV-FM in Monterey-Salinas, Calif., spun Melinda Doolittle's It's Your Love, putting her at 81 in her first week.

1 2 Kelly Clarkson, My Life Would Suck Without You (7295 spins)

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Here are the weekly sales & download totals from USA Today.

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information – USATODAY.com

    The numbers game

Sorry the sales figures are coming later in the day than usual, but I’ve been running about most of the day (seeing the announcement that Barbara Mandrell, Roy Clark and the great harmonica player Charlie McCoy are going into the County Music Hall of Fame, for one thing –- congratulations to them).

    So here’s what I’ve got:

Kelly Clarkson (who isn't a lesbian, she tells Popeater) has the top-selling download, naturally, even though sales of My Like Would Suck Without You are off 23 percent from its impressive 280,000 debut. This week it sold 219,000, bringing its two-week total to 496,000. All the Kelly C. hype has bumped sales of her album Breakaway, too: It sold 2,000 copies last week, and its total stands at slightly more than 6 million.

There’s a massive drop-off in downloads after My Life Would Suck Without You. David Cook’s Light On sold 35,000 –- off 30 percent from the previous week’s 49,000. Its new total: 677,000. David C. does still have the best-selling Idol album this week, with 18,000, though that’s a 27 percent drop from 24,000. It continues to gain on the million mark –- total sales currently stand at 936,000. (Of those, 104,000 are digital sales, because the album sold 2,000 copies digitally last week, down from 3,000 the week before.)

David Archuleta’s Crush stayed steady at 33,000 last week, meaning it passed the 1.5 million mark. A Little Too Not Over You grew its sales 11 percent over the previous week –- 9,000 from 8,000 -- to put that track’s total at 83,000. His album’s sales dropped 6 percent to 9,000, with cumulative sales approaching 619,000.

Jordin Sparks’ No Air drops 17 percent, from 18,000 to 15,000 (total: 2.8 million). One Step at a Time takes a 24 percent cut, 12,000 to 9,000 (total 1.2 million).

Carrie Underwood’s Just a Dream sold 9,000, off 26 percent from 13,000. Just a Dream stands at 611,000 total. Carrie's Carnival Ride album stayed basically even at 7,000 (2.6 million total), while Some Hearts sold another 5,000 (6.7 million).

Jennifer Hudson’s Spotlight takes a healthy 28 percent jump, from 7,000 to 9,000, putting its total at 409,000. We'll see if her version of The Star-Spangled Banner, now on sale at iTunes, charts next week.

Here are figures for three other albums:

Daughtry, Daughtry: 5,000, off 15 percent from 6,000 (4.4 million total)

Various, Hit Man: David Foster & Friends: 4,000, off 20 percent from 5,000 (140,000).

Kellie Pickler, Kellie Pickler: 2,000, off 9 percent from nearly 3,000 (167,000)

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

The Airplay totals for the past week.

This week's Idol airplay chart - Idol Chatter - USATODAY.com

    This week's Idol airplay chart
How big a hit is Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You shaping up to be? It adds an additional 1,900 spins on this week's Idol chart, making it an easy Number One for the second week. For comparison (though, admittedly, it's not exactly apples to apples), take a look at Carrie Underwood's new single, I Told You So. Carrie reliably reaches the top of the charts in her format, and a new single from her is a pretty easy add for country programmers. It's the next biggest mover on our Idol chart (it's at 21 its fourth week on USA TODAY's country airplay chart), picking up 750 spins -- less than half the growth of Kelly's record. (Kelly, also in her fourth week on the charts, sits at 9 on both USA TODAY's Top 40 and Hot AC charts). In fact, My Life Would Suck Without You got more play than all three of Carrie's singles in the Idol Top 10 -- I Told You So; Carrie's previous single, Just a Dream; and the always popular Before He Cheats.
Jennifer Hudson's Super Bowl rendition of The Star Spangled Banner vaults into our Idol Top 40 at 35 on the backs of several Urban AC stations that played it. Don't be surprised if the song Jennifer sang on the Grammys, You Pulled Me Through, does something similar next week.
Taylor Hicks' What's Right Is Right moves from 64 to 48, with nine new stations picking up the single and WTCB-FM in Columbia, S.C., playing it the most. Four more AC stations have added Melinda Doolittle's It's Your Love, with KUMU-FM in Honolulu, Hawaii, and WLNP-FM, in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., playing it most. It's Your Love climbs from 81 to 63 in its second week.
