The big news in American Idol sales this week is that the downloads of the studio versions are now part of the iTunes rankings. Also, Katy Perry saw large increases in album and single downloads following her Idol appearance, and Kanye West's and The Fray's versions of Heartless got a boost when Kris sang the song.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Idol Airplay for the past week:

Kelly Clarkson takes top two spots on the American Idol airplay chart - Idol Chatter - USATODAY.com

Kelly Clarkson takes top two spots on the American Idol airplay chart

This week's American Idol airplay chart has more movement than usual, thanks to the end of the Idol season as well as several recent singles.

Kelly Clarkson takes the two top spots on our Mediabase-powered chart, with My Life Would Suck Without You and I Do Not Hook Up. Meanwhile, David Cook's Come Back to Me moves from #10 to #8 and Daughtry's No Surprise moves into the Top 10 after just three weeks.

Bucky Covington climbs from #34 to #30 with I Want My LIfe Back. Jordin Sparks quintuples her spins for Battlefield (from 84 to 414), pushing her from #55 to #38. Kris Allen makes the Idol Top 40 with No Boundaries, which receives 365 spins.

Allen has five songs on the chart this week: No Boundaries (#40), Ain't No Sunshine (#82), What's Going On (tied for #98), his Renegade duet with Danny Gokey (also tied for #98), and Come Together (tied for #102). Adam Lambert has four: No Boundaries (#63), Mad World (#81), his medley with KISS (#87) and A Change Is Gonna Come (tied for #102).

Update: My original post did not account for the presence of the two duets -- Adam Lambert and Kiss' version of Detroit Rock City/Rock & Roll All Nite and Kris Allen's Renegade with Danny Gokey. The chart now reflects their addition.

1 1 Kelly Clarkson, My Life Would Suck Without You (9964)
2 3 Kelly Clarkson, I Do Not Hook Up (7530)
    3 2 Carrie Underwood, I Told You So (5487)

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Weekly sales data from the good folks at USA Today. This is a long one.

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information ‚Äď USATODAY.com

American Idols dominate weekly sales charts

Sure, American Idol's going to rule the sales charts the week after the finale, but just how big a deal was it? Let's do the math.

American Idols held 43 of the top 200 places on Nielsen SoundScan's current digital tracks chart, including three spaces in the Top 10. Add the artists who appeared on the finale, and those figures climb to 48 out of 200 and four of the Top 10, including the Black Eyed Peas' Boom Boom Pow, the most-downloaded track (plus two other acts, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, who appeared earlier in the season).

Add all the Idol track sales together, and they easily pass 1.25 million downloads (that's nearly a quarter of the Top 200's combined sales). The Season 8 finalists alone approached a million downloads (910,000, if I did my math right).

Naturally, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert did the best. Adam even bested Kris on album downloads -- and he picked up nearly 10,000 downloads of his performance of Is Anybody Listening? from the musical The Ten Commandments. Danny Gokey's You Are So Beautiful and Allison Iraheta's Cry Baby also made the chart.

Kris Allen, No Boundaries (134,000, debut, 134,000 total)
Kris Allen, Heartless (American Idol Studio Version) (125,000, debut, 125,000)
Adam Lambert, Mad World (American Idol Studio Version) (115,000 debut, 115,000)

For more context, here's a press release 19 Entertainment serviced this morning:

(Los Angeles, CA – Thursday, May 28, 2009) They were the top two contestants on season eight of American Idol, but now winner Kris Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert have reached another milestone – domination of Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, with a combined nine debuts on the survey, topped by Kris’ recording of No Boundaries at No. 11.

The nine debuting singles by Kris and Adam are:

No. 11: No Boundaries, Kris Allen
    No. 16: Heartless, Kris Allen
No. 19: Mad World, Adam Lambert
No. 37: Ain’t No Sunshine, Kris Allen
No. 56: A Change Is Gonna Come, Adam Lambert
    No. 66: Apologize, Kris Allen
No. 72: No Boundaries, Adam Lambert
    No. 82: One, Adam Lambert
No. 94: Falling Slowly, Kris Allen

All nine tracks are released by 19 Recordings.

Kris’ version of Heartless is the highest-charting recording of that song on this week’s chart. Kanye West’s original, which peaked at No. 2 earlier this year, falls to No. 48 and a cover version of the Fray that debuted last week at No. 79 falls off the list.

Adam’s interpretation of Mad World puts that classic song on the Hot 100 for the first time. Neither the original by Tears for Fears nor the remake by Gary Jules ever appeared on this chart.

Ain’t No Sunshine is back on the Hot 100 for the first time in 17 years. Kris has the most successful cover version of Bill Withers’ original, which peaked at No. 3 in 1971. Rapper Kid Frost recorded a version titled No Sunshine, which went to No. 95 in 1992.

Similarly, Adam’s remake of Sam Cooke’s classic civil rights song, A Change Is Gonna Come, is the highest-charting cover of that tune. The 5th Dimension included it in a medley that peaked at No 60 in 1970; Adam’s version marks the song’s first time back on the Hot 100 in 39 years. Cooke’s original peaked at No. 31 in 1964.

Adam’s take on U2’s One is also the highest-charting cover version of that song, besting the No. 86 peak of Mary J. Blige and Bono’s remake in 2006. The original peaked at No. 10 in 1992.

Kris’ version of the Oscar-winning Falling Slowly from the film Once is the first remake of that song to appear on the Hot 100. The original, by Glen Hansard and Marketa Inglova, debuted and peaked at No. 61 in March 2008.

Kris and Adam aren’t the only American Idols on this week’s Hot 100. David Cook debuts at No. 24 with Permanent, the song he performed on the series’ season finale. All proceeds from Cook’s live performance of the song are being donated to Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure, a Washington, D.C.-based organization dedicated to finding a cure for brain cancer. Cook also re-enters the tally with Come Back to Me at No. 84.

Carrie Underwood also re-enters the chart, with her remake of Mötley Crüe’s Home Sweet Home, at No. 79. Carrie performed the song on the Tuesday night season finale show, and her recording was heard all through the season as a goodbye song for finalists who were voted off the show. Carrie is also at No. 68 this week with I Told You So, featuring Randy Travis.

Add in Kelly Clarkson, charting with her new single I Do Not Hook Up as well as its predecessor, My Life Would Suck Without You; Kellie Pickler, having a great run with Best Days Of Your Life; Daughtry, on the survey with No Surprise and Jordin Sparks, charting with her new single, Battlefield, and there are 18 American Idol songs on this week’s Hot 100.

Meanwhile, Kris and Adam are making their presence felt on other charts as well. Their respective Season 8 Performances collections, offered exclusively at iTunes, both debut on The Billboard 200 album chart. On Hot Digital Songs, the pair has 10 debuts, including three in the top 10. On the Adult Contemporary chart, Kris’ No Boundaries is a new entry at No. 27.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

WOW. Terrific first post show week for Kris and Adam. It doesn't hurt that they've both hit major talk venues and showcased both Mad World and Heartless, as well as No Boundaries for non-Idol audiences. Both have said they want to jump right into producing their first albums, so this should be a hectic ride for them and a satisfying ride for us.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

As always thanks to Brian over at USA Today.

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information – USATODAY.com

The American Idol airplay chart -- and a new single from Brooke White

Lots of shuffling in the Top 10 of our American Idol airplay chart this week, as singles by Kellie Pickler, Daughtry and David Cook continue to climb, while dominant hits from Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood start to work their way back down the chart. Kellie and Carrie switch places, as Best Days of Your Life moves from #5 to #3.

And, while David C.'s Come Back to Me continues to move up the chart, Daughtry's No Surprise leapfrogs it, going from #9 to #6. Jordin Sparks' Battlefield also continues to advance, moving from #38 to #21.

Kris Allen -- whose Friday trip to Walt Disney World included a visit to the American Idol Experience -- didn't see No Boundaries move up as much as Battlefield, but it did get more spins last week than it did during the week of the finale (365 to 402), and Heartless stayed on the chart as well. Adam Lambert nearly doubled his spins for No Boundaries (46 to 82), moving him from #63 to #56 on the chart.

Josh Gracin's first post-Lyric Street single, Enough (which you can hear on his MySpace page) picked up 13 spins -- that's not enough to get him onto USA TODAY's country chart, but it is enough to put him at #85 on the Idol chart.

Though I haven't seen any airplay for it yet, Brooke White has just sent out the new single from her forthcoming High Hopes and Heartbreaks album (due July 21). It's called Radio Radio -- not the Elvis Costello song, but a sweet little piano-based pop tune that wouldn't have sounded at all out of place on AM radio circa 1974. Maybe she'll post it on her MySpace page at some point this week.

The sales figures for the week, thanks to USA Today. It won't be long before the Album is a thing of the past. We seem to have gone back to the 50's & the single is driving the most business.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Here is the weekly Airplay stats from Brian at USA Today.

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information ‚Äď USATODAY.com

Jordin Sparks moves into the Idol airplay Top 10

Jordin Sparks' Battlefield moves into the Top 10 of our American Idol airplay chart this week, pushing out David Cook's AC powerhouse Light On. Also, Daughtry's No Surprise moves from #5 to #3 -- and less than 200 spins separate the top two tracks, Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You and I Do Not Hook Up.

I've added something new the American Idol airplay chart this week. In addition to ranking the Idols according to their spins, I've also included chart positions for all the tracks that have made the Mediabase-powered USA TODAY charts. That way, you can see which formats are playing the singles, and it will also give you a better idea what certain number of spins means for a given chart.

For example, you'll know that Kris Allen's 394 spins translates into #21 on the AC chart and that, even though David Cook's Come Back to Me ranks behind No Boundaries on the AC chart, the airplay that David C. receives on the Hot AC chart propels him much further up our chart.

If you think I should keep this feature, say something.

    TW/LW
1 1 Kelly Clarkson, My Life Would Suck Without You (8846) (#17 AC, #8 Hot AC, #16 Top 40)
