Here is the weekly radio update from Brian at USA Today.

Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Bucky Covington make moves on the American Idol airplay chart - Idol Chatter - USATODAY.com

Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Bucky Covington make moves on the American Idol airplay chart

My Life Would Suck Without You may be fading from Top 40 playlists, but Kelly Clarkson's new single, I Do Not Hook Up, is making up for it. While play for MLWSWY dropped nearly a thousand spins last week, IDNHU added more than a thousand, moving from #9 to #4 on this week's American Idol airplay chart.

Some other singles are picking up steam as well. While Carrie Underwood's I Told You So and Kellie Pickler's Best Days of Your Life continue their progress, David Cook's Come Back to Me makes a sizable jump (22-14) by picking up plays on 45 stations, including big Hot AC adds from Dallas' KDMX-FM and KLCA-FM in Reno, Nev. Also, Bucky Covington's I Want My Life Back shows some signs of life, as country stations in Johnson City, Tenn.; Charleston, W.V.; and Jackson, Miss. pick up the single.

Adam Lambert and Kris Allen were the only Season 8 singers with enough juice to make the Top 100. Adam picked up 10 plays for If I Can't Have You, while Kris got 7 for She Works Hard for the Money.

Isn't the digitized world too fantastic? They can now count the number of times the play button is pushed at the radio station, if that is what you mean by number of spins. I'm shaking my head...unreal.

Actually the radio stations report the spin data to charting services such as Billboard & Mediabase. Mediabase is where this particular info comes from & they update the data twice a day, usually around 4am & 3pm. Stations also have to report the spins to services that collect royalty money for the song writers. So, it's not so much that anyone is able to track the stuff as it is that stations have to report it.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Here are the sales results for the week.

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information – USATODAY.com

David Archuleta's American Idol appearance pays off; Kelly Clarkson still sells best

Kelly Clarkson passes the half-million mark with her All I Ever Wanted album this week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, as the album sells 18,000 units (a 6 percent drop), bringing its release-to-date sales to 509,000. On the digital side, she saw 10 percent growth, with 4,000 downloads taking her digital total to 108,000.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Here is this weeks airplay data.

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information – USATODAY.com

Carrie, David C., Kelly and Kellie pick up steam on our American Idol airplay chart

The latest singles from Carrie Underwood (I Told You So), Kelly Clarkson (I Do Not Hook Up), Kellie Pickler (Best Days of Your Life) and David Cook (Come Back to Me) all saw a lot of airplay growth last week. Kelly's My Life Would Suck Without You remains the most-played Idol song, but Carrie's I Told You So moves up to #2 on the USA TODAY country airplay chart and likely will hit the top spot there next week.

Michael Johns has the week's highest debut on our Idol chart, at 67, as 11 stations pick up his new single, Heart on My Sleeve, notably KVLY-FM in McAllen, Texas; KNEV-FM in Reno, Nev.; and KLLY-FM in Bakersfield, Calif.

Thirteen country stations gave Taylor Hicks' Seven Mile Breakdown a shot, including WKIS-FM in Miami, Fla., and stations in those American Idol hotbeds Salt Lake City, Utah (KUBL-FM), and Kansas City, Mo. (KFKF-FM). That's enough to put him at 77 on our chart, but he's still a long way from making a significant dent on the country chart.

All four remaining Idols on this year's show got a little airplay. Danny Gokey had the most, with eight spins for Come Rain or Come Shine (#89), while Adam Lambert got seven for Feeling Good (#93). Kris Allen had five for The Way You Look Tonight, putting him in a three-way tie for #99, and Allison Iraheta's Someone to Watch Over Me got four spins -- not enough to make our Top 100.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

    Sales data anyone?

Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors & Information – USATODAY.com

    American Idol sales numbers
My day has been absolutely slammed, so I'm not going to go into a lot of detail with today's Nielsen SoundScan numbers. But I do want to note a few things:
    • Taylor Hicks saw a 148 percent increase in sales of The Distance following his appearance on American Idol last week.
    • Jamie Foxx's Blame It got a nice boost from his performance on the show, too. Two versions of the song made SoundScan's Digital Tracks Current chart.
    • Kellie Pickler seams to be reaping the benefits of a hit single combined with an opening slot of the high-profile Taylor Swift tour, which opened April 23. Digital sales of her Best Days of Your Life track stayed steady at a healthy 31,000 and sales of her Kellie Pickler album rose 19 percent last week.
    • I Do Not Hook Up passed My Life Would Suck Without You to become last week's top-selling Kelly Clarkson track.
More numbers after the jump ...

Here’s a tale of two Idols:

Two weeks ago, American Idol Season Five winner Taylor Hicks performed Seven Mile Breakdown on the Wednesday show. As a result, Taylor’s new single got 21 spins on country stations. After that, though, most of the stations seemed to lose interest: In the past week, Seven Mile Breakdown got just four spins – not enough to make the Top 100 of our Idol airplay chart.

Last Wednesday, Daughtry introduced No Surprise, the lead single from July’s Leave This Town album. No Surprise debuted with 431 spins, enough to place it at #36 on our Idol chart.

Friday was Danny Gokey Day in Milwaukee, especially if you listened to station 99.1 WMYX-FM. WMYX played Danny’s Idol performances 20 times last week, even dipping back into the archives to resurrect P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) and What Hurts the Most, both of which returned to our chart this week. That was by far the best hometown radio reception any of the Idol contenders received. KURB-FM in Little Rock, which regularly plays Kris Allen’s performances, played only a little more of his music than usual, while Adam didn’t pick up any spins for his return trip to San Diego.

Top Rock Week performers, though, were Adam’s Whole Lotta Love, Kris Allen’s Come Together and the Adam/Allison Iraheta version of Slow Ride. Danny’s Dream On got just three spins, not enough to make our Top 100, though I’m betting some morning shows played a few choices seconds of his performance more than that. Allison’s Cry Baby got only two plays.

Overall, Danny got 27 spins last week, including four for his Renegade duet with Kris; Adam got 12, including the five for Slow Ride; Kris also got 12; and Allison got 7.

It’s just a matter of time until Kelly Clarkson’s I Do Not Hook Up takes over the top spot on our chart. Though it doesn’t change position this week, it’s gaining on My Life Would Suck Without You and Carrie Underwood’s I Told You So, both of which see a decrease in play. Kellie Pickler’s Best Days of Your Life also picks up some action and moves to #5.

Elsewhere on our chart, Bucky Covington’s I Want My Life Back moves from #36 to #32, Michael Johns’ Heart on My Sleeve climbs from #67 to #55, and David Cook’s Come Back to Me picks up nearly a hundred spins without moving from its #12 slot. Airplay for Cook’s Bar-Ba-Sol, however, drops my more than half, as the track drops from #66 to #80.

Daughtry's performance on American Idol last Wednesday helped the band debut its new single with a big splash. According to Nielsen SoundScan, No Surprise was last week's fourth-best-selling download and by far the best-selling Idol-related track, with 104,000 digital scans. And though the band's new album, Leave This Town, won't be out until July, the Idol appearance also boosted sales of the band's debut album exponentially.

Elliott Yamin's Fight for Love debuted at #26 on SoundScan's Top Current Albums chart, selling approximately 20,000 units.

Re: Idol sales totals from USA Today

Weekly radio info, thanks to USA Today.

American Idol airplay: A good week for the Dynamic Duo - Idol Chatter - USATODAY.com

American Idol airplay: A good week for the Dynamic Duo

David Cook’s Come Back to Me moves into the Top 10 of USA TODAY’s Mediabase-powered American Idol airplay chart this week, and Daughtry more than triples the spins for No Surprise, as the band’s new single leaps from #36 to #15.

AllenLambert_restricted Perhaps the more interesting story, though, is the play for this season’s last three contestants. Both Kris Allen and Adam Lambert had one of the more successful radio weeks of this season, with Kris’ Heartless picking up 22 spins and Adam's One 18.

A head-to-head comparison of One and Heartless shows Adam getting 18 stations playing his performance and Kris getting 17 – with just two stations, KTDY-FM in Lafayette, La., and WEZF-FM in Burlington, Vt., spinning both. A far as formats, Adam had the edge in AC (5 spins to 3) and Hot AC (9 to 8), while Kris dominated Top 40 play (8 spins to 4) and picked up one spin on Rhythmic station KDON-FM in Monterey-Salinas, Calif., and on Rock station WLUP-FM in Chicago. Overall, Heartless had double the audience for its spins than One did (230,000 to 112,000).

Also, Kris got a little play for Heartless outside of morning shows, as four stations played it during the middle of the day as well – and “hometown” station KURB-FM in Little Rock, played it four times throughout the day. Adam’s play came almost exclusively during morning shows, with only a single station playing One during the midday part.

Danny Gokey’s You Are So Beautiful and Kris’ Apologize also made the chart, with eight and seven spins respectively. Danny’s version of Dance Little Sister picked up three spins, not enough to make the chart. Adam had six additional songs that got one or two spins, while Kris had four. Kris got the most combined spins with 34, while Adam had 26 and Danny had 12.
