    Re: Carrie Underwood

Here is the first article on last nights show at the Mohegan Sun in Ct.. Even though it doesn’t go into it, from reports by those that were there, she did 14 or 15 songs & had 4 costume changes.

On the road: A full house greets Urban, Underwood - USATODAY.com

By Kenneth Partridge for USA TODAY
Location: Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Conn.

Attendance: A sellout crowd of 7,600

The event: Country superstars Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood opened their co-headlining Love, Pain & the whole crazy Carnival Ride tour with the first of two concerts at the Mohegan Sun Casino.

Stage setup: A giant runway ran down the middle of the arena, allowing the easy-on-the-eyes performers to play supermodel and pose for fans' pictures.

The crowd: Men, women and children of all ages. While fans had plenty of nice things to say about Keith Urban, there's no competing with an American Idol. "I'm partial to the guys, but I like Carrie Underwood better," says Jennifer Cain, 24, who drove down from New Hampshire. "She's the all-American girl," adds her mom, Patty, who bought the tickets for Christmas. "She's still sweet, and she's not jaded."

Grand entrance: Performing first, Underwood emerged from below the stage, rising slowly through a trapdoor as the audience screamed in anticipation. Sporting blond locks, black patent-leather leg warmers and matching stilettos, she looked like every teenage boy's ideal girl next door.

Lucky dog: "He's the best little boy a girl could ever want," Underwood said of her dog, Ace, in introducing The More Boys I Meet, a song about finding Prince Charming. "Better than a lot of the real boys I end up dating from time to time."

Costume changes: Underwood swapped her black-on-black ensemble for a light blue Cinderella gown to sing Jesus, Take the Wheel.

Anger management: Underwood closed her encore with Before He Cheats, and as she sang of bashing up her ex's 4-wheel drive, women cheered from all corners of the arena.

Star power: Not one to be outdone, Urban opened his set in front of an outer-space backdrop, playing Once in a Lifetime as light and video effects made it appear that a comet was racing into the crowd. Fans welcomed annihilation with open arms.

Dad to be: Referencing wife Nicole Kidman's pregnancy, Urban teased the crowd with a snippet of Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys, adding, "Maybe we will."

Let it rain: Bathed in blue light, Urban played a solo, acoustic version of Raining on Sunday from the middle of the catwalk. Judging from the dozens of shrieking young women pushing to get closer, he'd have absolutely no trouble bumming an umbrella.

Guitar hero: While Underwood strummed along with several of her songs, Urban ripped monster solos on tunes like Used to the Pain. At one point, he switched to bass, proving you don't need six strings to rock.

No bad seats: Urban and his band moved to a tiny stage at the back of the arena, treating those farthest from the stage to up-close and unplugged versions of You're My Better Half and Making Memories of Us.

Drum line: As Urban played I Told You So, 20 young marching-band drummers filed onstage and drove the beat home.

The gift of rock: After going wireless to play You Look Good in My Shirt from the stands, Urban gave his wireless electric guitar to stunned 15-year-old fan Leo Pelletier.

Unlikely encore: Don't tell Nashville, but Urban is an alt-rocker from way back. Why else would he start his encore set with a cover of the Violent Femmes' classic Blister in the Sun?

Late for work: A lot of people in eastern Connecticut probably called in sick today, as Urban just wouldn't quit. Sure, heart-shaped confetti fell after would-be closer Better Life, but that didn't stop the band from plowing through Everybody.

Next stops: Uncasville, Conn., tonight; Rochester, N.Y., Saturday.

    Re: Carrie Underwood

Here is another great review of last night. I promise not to be putting all these up for the duration of the tour, but last night was opening night, so here you go.

TheDay.com - Underwood shines, Urban electrifies

    Underwood shines, Urban electrifies

    By Kristina Dorsey
    Published on 2/1/2008

Our little “Idol” is all grown up.

Carrie Underwood showed Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena that she has developed into an assured performer who knows how to work the stage. While she was always just slightly stiff on “American Idol,” she seems much more relaxed and to be really enjoying herself now.

And that voice? Still dynamite. It's like Martina McBride's, only more full-bodied.

What's so astonishing is how effortless Underwood's singing seems, even in concert. She possesses amazing vocal control. Even when she was reaching for the skyscraper notes on “So Small” and “Jesus Take the Wheel,” she didn't strain. Her singing remained rich and dead-on - the perfect delivery system for a power ballad.

Thursday's show marked the start of Underwood's run as the opening act for Keith Urban. It was actually a two-night stand at the Sun, with a follow-up show Friday. After her Urban gigs, Underwood will graduate to headlining her own tour, and, based on the Sun show, she is ready.

She maintained her down-to-earth vibe, which is a huge part of her appeal, but she also looked gorgeous, with that cover-girl face and “Charlie's Angels” hair. She wedged a significant number of costume changes into an 80-minute stint - from tight black pants and top; to billowy blue gown, with the voluminous skirt later pulled away to reveal a blue shift; to jeans and tank top, which she then covered with a white peasant blouse.

Some of the stagecraft needed tweaking. Whoever designed the concert lighting needed to lay off the caffeine. For the faster songs, the lights flashed and spun and rolled at such a manic pace, they could have made a concert-goer woozy.

While some of Underwood's tunes are stand-out creations, most notably “Before He Cheats” and “Wasted,” she could stand to expand the type of songs she performs. Toward the end of her set, they started to blend together, particularly the slower songs. What Underwood should do for her next CD is pull a Kelly Clarkson, co-writing some very personal, very distinctive songs that tick off record executives but that let her grow artistically.

While Underwood was quite good, Urban was phenomenal. He spent two electrifying hours onstage. He ripped into guitar solos like a rock star possessed. He sang with soulful enthusiasm, and he worked the catwalk that wended its way across the arena floor.

Urban was in the news a month ago when it was announced that he and wife Nicole Kidman are going to have a baby.

Urban last played Mohegan Sun in August, and he told the crowd Thursday, “A few things have been happening since I've been away.”

The crowd cheered, and he broke into a huge, glittering grin.

He then sang the line, “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys.”

“Or,” he added, “maybe we will.”

He was apparently feeling generous. During “You Look Good In My Shirt,” Urban strode into the crowd to sing and play his guitar. He signed his guitar and handed it to a guy in the audience. Makes the folks who merely toss picks into the crowd look like pikers, eh?
