This is shaping up to be quite the ground breaking week for Carrie. Some Hearts will be the #1 album on the Country Charts for the 6th straight week. Jesus Take the Wheel has passed George Strait & is now the #1 single on the Billboard Country Charts. And Some Hearts has just been certified as DOUBLE PLATINUM. There are certainly a lot of firsts & fastests in Carries resume, & all this after only 8 weeks. She still has an outside chance to have the #1 album on the Billboard Top 200, but only the Soundscan totals can confirm this.

    Today's Country Music News!
Carrie Underwood Makes Music History Again as Some Hearts Hits Double-Platinum Status, Becoming RIAA’s Fastest-Certified and Nielsen SoundScan’s Fastest-Selling Debut Country Album!

Nashville, TN – 2005 American Idol winner Carrie Underwood begins 2006 with her 19 Recordings/Arista Nashville collection, Some Hearts, setting the benchmark for all new artists to follow and creating music history as the fastest-selling debut country album in Nielsen SoundScan history. Now RIAA-certified Double Platinum (recognizing sales of 2,000,000 units), Some Hearts also earns the separate distinction of becoming the fastest-certified debut country album ever released, even as the disc’s powerful lead single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” hits #1 on this week’s Billboard country airplay chart.

Currently in its fifth consecutive week (sixth overall) at #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums sales chart, fan excitement over Some Hearts had earlier propelled first week sales to more than 314,000, already making Carrie the highest-debuting new artist in the country genre during the SoundScan era.

The remarkable sales story extended through the holiday season, with a recent one-week tally exceeding 401,000 units. Billboard reports that Some Hearts has also become the fastest-selling American Idol project to date, outpacing earlier discs at the six-week sales point.

    Double platinum already?! That's amazing!
Here's some news about an upcoming event Carrie's participating in.

Hundreds of Country Music Industry and Radio Professionals Unite to Honor the Life-Saving Mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives from 225 radio stations will join some of country music's brightest stars Jan. 12-15 for the annual St. Jude Radio Training Seminar in Memphis. The seminar will unite nearly 900 attendees from across the country, all of whom are dedicated to the life-saving mission of St. Jude through the radio fund-raising programs Country Cares for St. Jude Kids® and Radio Cares for St. Jude Kids(TM).

In addition to the radio representatives, Carrie Underwood, Julie Roberts, Jamey Johnson, Trent Willmon, Josh Turner and Randy Owen of the GRAMMY® Award-winning group ALABAMA are among the artists scheduled to visit St. Jude, the world's premier center dedicated to the research and treatment of catastrophic childhood diseases. During the seminar, the artists, industry representatives and radio station personnel will tour the hospital, meet patients and attend sessions about planning successful radiothons. This year's event is sponsored in part by Back Yard Burger Catering and Central Imaging and Printing.

"Everyone here -- the employees, the patients, their families -- looks forward to the seminar," said ALSAC/St. Jude Radio and Entertainment Marketing Director Teri Watson. "This is the one time of the year when we can embrace our radio and music friends to thank them and remind them of why we still need their support."

St. Jude has been actively involved in radiothon fund-raising for more than 30 years. In fact, hundreds of radio stations across the country have helped raise more than $250 million for the life-saving work of St. Jude, and the list of partner stations continues to expand. St. Jude radiothons typically last two days and are highlighted by patient stories, story song vignettes, celebrity involvement and radio station promotions.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fund-raising organization. It may be a little late, but here is a good review of the album, & a nod to 19/RCA & AI for letting Carrie be Carrie instead of pressing her to be something she isn’t. Clive Davis take note what can happen when you aren't involved!!

PS: I edited the age thing the author had her as 18.

When I hear “American Idol” attached to the release of an album, I immediately cringe. (The thought of Ruben Studdard’s crapola single, “Sorry 2004” still gives me a full-body shudder). Combine “American Idol” with “country” and you’re unlikely to get a lot of sympathy from critics. This makes Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts such a delightful surprise. There’s no doubt that Underwood has vocal chops—she had a near-perfect batting record during Idol’s fourth season, despite occasional on-stage awkwardness (she’s only 22). However a strong set of pipes does not always equal artistic merit (for the three of you who bought Justin Guarini’s album, can you even remember any of the songs on it?).

What makes Underwood’s album work so well is the sincerity of her interpretation and the maturity of her voice. This is crucial on a country album, where cynics are ready with their teeth bared, looking for the first sign of schmaltz. The title alone of Underwood’s first single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” courts danger. Yet Underwood pulls it off and the result is less hokey than the title led me to believe. Which isn’t to say that Some Hearts doesn’t court melodrama—it does—but in true country fashion, Underwood wins over the occasionally treacle with unflinching commitment to her material. She fleshes out each song with as much feeling as possible.

She also proves she can have fun with “Before He Cheats,” a see-I-can-be-a-bad-girl-too romp where she vows revenge on her duplicitous ex. The song is spunky fun and is a ready-made country single. Give Underwood credit for touching on a variety of subjects, including alcoholism, growing up and fame. These ideas are presented with a refreshing lack of pretension anchored by Underwood’s winning vocals. “Inside Your Heaven,” while not exactly “Imagine,” is still the best of the American Idol singles (when was the last time you heard a radio station play Fantasia’s “I Believe” or Ruben’s “Flying Without Wings”?).

Some Hearts may not break any boundaries in terms of sound or material, but part of the reason it succeeds is because of its simplicity. The disc has been selling well since its debut in November. Perhaps the Idol juggernaut could learn a lesson from Underwood’s success—that instead of trying to turn talented kids into pre-packaged, over-processed pop wailers, they should tailor the material to the talents that made their young stars so winning on the show. Some Hearts is a promising beginning that evokes the very unique talents of Carrie Underwood
