    Re: Paula Abdul - Judge

A nice piece posted on eonline ...

The night Scott MacIntyre got booted from American Idol five weeks ago, Paula Abdul took him aside and said, "I have a wonderful surprise for you in a couple of weeks," he told Access Hollywood. That surprise came on Friday when the Idol judge presented the visually challenged singer with a guide dog from Guide Dogs of America in Sylmar, Calif.

Scott walked—or "test drove" as he joked—two of the organization's Labrador retrievers on Friday, but he won't get his dog until after the American Idol tour ends on Sept. 15. At that time, he'll get matched up with the right pooch for him and go through a 28-day training process. "We have to find a dog that really likes loud music," joked Paula.

Scott, who was lured to the event under the false pretense that he was there to sing, was quite surprised to learn the truth...

"Are you serious? Thank you so much," Scott told Paula at the event, which was in honor of May being National Guide Dog Month and cosponsored by Natural Balance Pet Foods and Petco.

Scott is the first visually challenged contestant on American Idol. The Scottsdale, Ariz., singer isn't completely blind; he has a 2 percent field of vision and gets around with the use of a cane. On the set of Idol, his fellow contestants would walk him to and from the stage. Now, he'll have a furry friend to help him out instead.

That is so touching. And remember the nice parting comments Paula had for Scott as well? I've always thought these three worked together because they each brought something - Simon is the decision maker and the one who says the hard things, Randy is the industry and the commentary, and Paula is the heart and soul.

I am hoping that the news reports of Paula not returning to Idol next season are false.
She and Simon are my favorites.

Reports just a few weeks ago were saying that ALL FOUR will return (whether we want Randy or Kara or not). Geez. What's made that change?

It's interesting in that the one story I DID just read: Idol fans campaign to keep Paula Abdul on show | Entertainment | People | Reuters

That deadweight Randy seems to be the only one not shooting off his mouth about his future on the show one way or the other.

He's signed for 2 more seasons so his future is set.

True; Randy is there until 2011. Simon's contract ends next June. While he has been offered a very rich deal, he has not yet signed on beyond Season 9.

Ryan just signed a three year deal for $10 million / year plus $15 million for merchandising rights. (And a $300k / year expense account! That's a lot of lunches and office supplies.)

Kara and Paula have no contract yet for Season 9. Probably the best thing Paula has going for her is that Simon is saying he wants her back. Since they are trying to woo Simon, that may carry some weight.

Also keep in mind that Paula has a new manager so this is his opportunity to earn his salary by pressuring the AI producers for something that is at least in the Ryan ballpark.

Paula has definitely established her presence on the show, so many fans will feel she is worth the money. Of course she has also been something of a headache for the producers and the source of some of the worst publicity for the show. She also is not negotiating from the strong position of Ryan and Simon who each have lucrative non-AI producing careers and can afford to walk away if they don't like the deal. All Paula has is the Home Shopping Network. She needs this job.

Well, if the Idol thing doesn't work out former boss Nigel Lythgoe says he would be happy to bring Paula on to So You Think You Can Dance as a guest judge (and hopefully choreographer). This according to a Daily Mail interview, mostly about the SYTYCD 100th episode coming up this week.

On the contract negotiations, Nigel did not claim any inside knowledge, but said:

...having spoken with [Fox president of alternative programming] Mike Darnell, I know Fox wants to keep Paula...The figures that have been quoted for Simon [Cowell] and Ryan [Seacrest] are great figures. I don't know if they're true, but Paula seeing those figures would make her pretty upset... They will talk and try to iron things out, and if they don't come to an agreement, then Paula will move on. At the end of the day, that program is bigger than any individual. Even Simon."

    Re: Paula Abdul - Judge

According to MSNBC, the Paula negotiations are not going well.

“American Idol” auditions are just two weeks away, and a deal for judge Paula Abdul has at best, stalled, and at worst is all but D.O.A.

“There’s an offer on the table, but it’s not one that Paula is happy with,” said a source close to the singer. “She sees the big money Ryan Seacrest got, she knows that Simon is close to a huge deal, too. She feels like it’s personal that she’s not getting the same big numbers,” said the source.
If Paula takes it personally that Ryan and Simon make more money than she does, and demands equal (or even nearly equal) salary - she is toast. On the other hand, if she can take the position that Ryan tripled his previous compensation and she could triple hers - she could come out OK. (That would give her 18 million over three years.)

Unfortunately, it sounds like she may be leaning toward the former. Or this could all be a big PR battle waged by her new manager. However, I would not disregard the role of ego in all of this.

It's kind of amazing, isn't it? We're in such a bad economy and she's concerned because someone may be making more more millions than she? Unbelievable!
