I wish they could bottle Ruben's smile, I'm sure it could heal the sick.
Still love him and was so pleased to see him the other night.
I think Idol gave him a pretty raw deal.
I wasn't keen on the song they sang, but thought they sang it really well.
I'd love for them to release a duet, or for their to be one on Jordin's album.

I was glad to see Ruben back on Idol on the AI6 finale, too. I don't think TPTB at AI have treated anyone from AI2 terribly fairly - certainly not the way they've been treating the AI5 contestants as a whole.

He sounded great with Jordin, and I agree it would be cool if they included a Ruben-Jordin duet on her first album.

Kim C. would beg to differ.

Maybe Kim would rather have had a record contract?

Anyway, since TPTB backed Ruben so solidly during the season and got their wish when he won, you'd think they'd have been more supportive of him during the AI4, AI5, and even AI6 seasons. I still don't understand why Fantasia and Ruben were passed over as participants (performers) on the Idol Gives Back extravaganza in favor of non-Idol artists and at least one Idol contestant who didn't make the final 2.

Studdard has vision for 205 Club
Wants to feature national, local artists Tuesday, August 28, 2007ROY L. WILLIAMSNews staff writer
American Idol Ruben Studdard pledges to play an active role in the operations of his nightclub planned for downtown Birmingham's entertainment district. He also intends to perform there occasionally.

Studdard said he envisions his Ruben's 205 Club near the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex as a House of Blues type of venue, with national artists appearing.

"I am a big fan of John Mayer and want him to be the first artist to play in my club when it opens in 2009," said Studdard, a Birmingham native and 2003 winner of the popular Fox network singing competition, "American Idol."

The House of Blues is a group of live-music clubs that originated in 1992 from a converted historical house in Cambridge, Mass., according to its Web site. Its clubs - in Dallas, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Orlando and other cities - draw top artists from country and hip-hop to heavy metal and rap.

Officials have not said exactly where Studdard's club will be inside the BJCC entertainment district, which will be bordered by 22nd Street North to 24th Street and Richard Arrington Boulevard and Ninth Avenue North.

Studdard said his 205 Club will feature a mix of rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel music that influenced him as an artist. Though he plans to bring in nationally known acts regularly, Studdard said he also wants his club to feature local talent and serve as a training ground for young Birmingham-area singers and groups.

"This is like a dream come true," Studdard said. "I've always wanted to operate my own club and thank God for this opportunity."

Studdard, who is working on his fourth album, didn't say how often he will perform or visit his club, adding it will be dictated by his tour schedule.

John Elkington of Performa Entertainment Real Estate, the Memphis developer building the $50 million district, said his firm is close to ironing out a contract with 2006 Birmingham "Idol" winner, Taylor Hicks.

"Our goal is to make the project reflect the music and culture of the region," said Elkington, whose company is known for the Beale Street development in Memphis. "That is why we wanted to have clubs by tenants such as Ruben, Taylor and Ona Watson, who we are close to signing as well."

Having Studdard's and Hicks' involvement gives the entertainment district the drawing power it needs to be successful, said Jack Fields, BJCC executive director.

"They give us a powerful one-two punch," Fields said.

At the BJCC board meeting two weeks ago, Mike Douglas, Hicks' Birmingham attorney, said Hicks is interested in opening a music-themed venue in the district where local musicians can "showcase their talents."

Efforts to reach Douglas on Monday were unsuccessful.

Elkington said Performa expects to have its nightclub venues lined up by next week. Then the firm will begin focusing on restaurants and retail tenants.

"Our intentions are to have enough tenants signed by late September to break ground this fall," he said.

Economic developers have touted the district as a recruiting tool for conventions and businesses. Plans call for two hotels and dozens of restaurants, nightclubs and retail shops that are expected to begin opening as early as summer 2009.

Studdard said he is still working on the details of his nightclub but is excited about being able to give back to the hometown that supported him on "Idol."

"Music is my life. I live and breathe it every day," he said. "I look forward to being able to help others live their dreams, too."

I wish Ruben every success in the world with this night club, I hope this business venture will thrive for him. Opening his own night club takes a lot of responsibility, money, buying insurance, paying artists, licenses.

    Wonder how Taylor is involved.

Taylor is opening up a club of his own in Birmingham too.
