    Ruben Studdard interview

    7/16: Speaking with Ruben
By Rodney Ho | Saturday, July 15, 2006, 06:05 PM

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

At Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, I got to speak to Ruben Studdard for about 25 minutes during soundcheck Saturday afternoon.

I’m going to split the Ruben Studdard interview I did Saturday into three parts since it’s fairly long. His concert was a lot of fun. Not a full house but the faithful did show (more than 1,000) and gave him much deserved love. He was in fine form vocally and his backup band was solid. He did some gospel, a load of covers (“What’s Goin’ On,” “How Can We Mend a Broken Heart,” “Never Too Much”) and even an acoustic set. He brought back “Superstar” from “Idol” days and a lovely acoustic version of “Flying Without Wings.” After a guy proposed to his woman in the audience, Ruben crooned Bryan Adams’ “Heaven.” Strange choice but it worked. He was in a relaxed, joking mood, teasing the front tables about their food, “threatening” to steal some of it away. He threw shoutouts to his family members and...

Not sure if I'm allowed to link this, so, I'll just say, you can hear Ruben's new single "Change Me" at his myspace site. It's already getting play at the Urban & Urban A/C stations, so, if you have one in your area, request it.

From news I've gotten from a friend in B'ham, I'm excited about the CD.

    Ru's got a BIG heart!

Idols and former Idols must be bombarded with requests to do things for a good cause, but this story about a gesture Ruben Studdard's making tomorrow in his hometown is one of the more heartwarming. From the press release:

It will be a moment -- a powerful and magic moment -- for a little girl in Birmingham when her hero and idol, American Idol Ruben Studdard, arrives to make her dreams come true.

A year ago, six-year-old Erica Garrett was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, and she is currently battling for her life. Ever since Birmingham's Ruben Studdard was named American Idol, she has dreamed of meeting him and thanks to Magic Moments, an Alabama-based organization that fulfills the wishes of children with life threatening or life-altering medical conditions, her dream is set to come true, Thursday, August 3, 2006.

On Thursday, a limousine will pick Erica up at her home and take her and her family to McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant in Birmingham, and at noon Studdard will arrive to meet Erica and sing I Need an Angel especially for her.

More background follows, from the press release:

"She didn't miss an episode of the whole Idol series that year, says Erica's mom, Sabrina Reese, who actually grew up in the same church with Ruben, the Rising Star Baptist Church in Birmingham. "He used to blow us away every Sunday in that church with his singing," she says.

Born prematurely 6 years ago, Erica weighed in at birth at 1 lb. 11 oz. She underwent heart surgery and spine surgery, among other medical treatments, in order to simply survive. According to her mom, she was a strong little baby and seemed to just "pop back" from each surgery, but in December 2005, a doctor examined her throat and found a tumor. Erica was diagnosed with Rhabdomysarcoma, an aggressive soft tissue tumor. With a hopeful outlook, they began what the doctor said would be one year's worth of chemo and radiation treatments. She has undergone 28 radiation treatments since and has five more chemotherapy treatments to go before they will know if the cancer is in remission. "Erica has yet to shed a tear; she's a very strong, brave little girl. She's destined to survive, and I'm so proud of her. God has been good to us," says her mom.
