I think of the 5 performances last night Angie did the best, followed by Candice, then Kree, then Amber, then Janelle.
I agree that at this stage of the game, one should be singing some moving songs or songs that would challenge one's vocal range and do vocal gymnastics. But then again, they let them sing 2 songs, so naturally a contestant can sing a safe song or experimental/risky song for their first song and a "bring the house down" song for their 2nd song. I get that because the singer is able to show how versatile she can be. If that song didn't work out, at least they have a 2nd song to fall back on.
As for Janelle's case, she doesn't have the power vocals that the others have. She seems to be relying on her country-ness. Hoping that if she stays true to her country roots, she can get a good chunk of the loyal country votes. She missed the fact that her stock went up when she took risks by going out of her element like what she did with her best performances in "You Keep Me Hanging On" and "I Will". And of all the Dolly Parton songs, she picked a forgettable one. "I Will Always Love You" in the stripped down (unplugged) version as sang by Ms. Parton (without vocal histrionics) would have been a very moving and sensitive moment for her.

Which brings us to Amber. Judges seem to still be surprised as to why she keeps landing the bottom. I think she peaked on My Funny Valentine and she hasn't topped that since, probably because she made it quite her own. I really don't think she's all that and her standing ovations since then were not really well deserved. Judges keep shoving her down America's throats (she is in all their top 3 including Jimmy's) even though she gets pitch problems at times (like last night's first song) and the tone in her voice is not as good as the rest. It's flat and can sound quite nasally. That being said, she may have enough support (she was bottom 2 last week so her fans may rally for her) to not have the least number of votes. I think Janelle will have more success than her after AI.
Kree, Candice and Angie are the legitimate top 3 of this Season's American Idol. Candice and especially Kree had a slight misstep in their first songs. Kree didn't connect to her song and she also seems awkward moving around the stage. She need to develop better stage presence. Although we said that about Carrie Underwood, but in her season, it was really just her and Bo Bice vying for the two spots in the finale. This season, Kree has Angie and Candice to fight for the 2 spots. I think she will fall short. In the beginning, I thought it was going to be an Angie vs. Kree finale. At this stage, Candice has been pulling all the stops and will take her place.
I thought the judges can only use the save up to the top 6. They didn't use it last week. So there shouldn't be any save anymore, correct?
Did anyone else glom on to Mariahs big faux pas last night when Candice sang Without You? Mariah recorded the song & sold a gazillion copies & she credited the song to Harry Nilsson. Now Harry had a #1 hit with the song but you'd think that Mariah would have known the song was written by Petr Ham & Tom Evans of Badfinger
