| Re: CelebTV's Breaking News: TOP MODEL SCANDAL About 50 years ago, there was a huge scandal over TV quiz shows supplying answers to contestants who were attractive and personable, in order to keep them on the show over other contestants who were considered to be less of an "audience draw". At that time, most shows were sponsored by one client, who frequently had his name in the title of the show; as a result, sponsors were given a great degree of input into the shows' content. (Sound familiar?) Sponsors of the quiz shows pushed for certain contestants to be favored over others and for "drama" to be added to the shows-- such as placing contestants in unventilated isolation booths to make them sweat "nervously" as they answered questions-- in order to increase viewers. Eventually, there was a Congressional investigation and quiz shows disappeared off TV for years, only to re-emerge as "game shows" with structures and rules that prevented favoring contestants. In 1994, Robert Redford directed a film, "Quiz Show", which dealt with the scandal; the film received four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. A pity neither Ken Mok nor Tyra Banks saw it, since 50 years later, the outcome of ANTM is clearly influenced by its sponsors*-- CG, Elite, and Seventeen are often represented by guest judges at eliminations-- and "drama" is created to keep viewers watching. Bending one of the eligibility rules to allow Saleisha to not only enter but win is inexcusable-- especially since she worked on ANTM C6 and Tyra's own show. This situation reeks to high heaven, and I think it's going to lead to C10 being the end of the line for ANTM, because I don't see this going away quickly. Too many TV critics remember the '50s scandal. Even if CW doesn't pull the plug, it's likely CG, Elite, and/or Seventeen will bail-- and I believe other sponsors will be hesitant to connect themselves with the show. ---------------- * I know some may take issue with the idea that Elite and Seventeen are "sponsors" like CG. While they may not run ads, they clearly provide services in exchange for cross-promotion, and are thus "sponsors" of the show in the same way CG openly is through its commercials. And none of the three prize providers should be allowed anywhere near a judging panel. |
