Poor Britain! "Got Talent" is being exported back to Simon's home...

Cowell's 'Got Talent' to be remade for UK

Friday, July 28 2006, 16:20 BST - by Neil Wilkes
ITV has signed a deal to broadcast a British version of Simon Cowell's new US reality series America's Got Talent.

The show invites all manner of talented performers - ranging from comedians to dancers and musicians - to try their luck in front of a panel of judges. In the later stages of the competition the public votes on who progresses in the competition and eventually, which act scoops the "substantial" cash prize.

The judging panel will include Piers Morgan - who is one of three judges on the US version - and Cowell. Although he executive produced the format, he was unable to appear on the US version because he is exclusively contracted with American Idol broadcaster Fox. America's Got Talent airs on rival network NBC.

“I am very excited about this show coming to Britain," said Cowell. "The fact that it has been such a huge success in America has made me even more enthusiastic about bringing it here. This competition has no rules and no age limits. On this show absolutely anything can happen."

The series is likely to air early next year following the conclusion of The X Factor.
So he's out to punish his home country, with plate spinning, finger snapping, and whatever other nonsense will inevitably be beaten a singer (my per theory is that novelty acts will NEVER beat the singers in the end... even in the U.K.)

I hadn't planned on watching the next US version. Like the inventor show, once was enough. The British version will, I suspect, have quite a number of, what's the word... oddities? audition. But yeah, a singer will probably win that one, too.

BGT was won by a very talented amateur opera singer, Paul Potts. His rendition of Nessun dorma is one of the best I've heard.
The YouTube clip of his first-round performance is pretty funny, in a way. One of the judges, Amanda something, asks why he's there, and he says, "To sing opera." Piers gives Simon a "yeah, right!" look, and you can see all three judges hunker down to weather the storm. Then Paul starts singing. Simon's head literally snaps up, and Piers gets a WTH look on his face. Amanda is ready to have Paul's baby by the time he finishes.

Paul Potts rocked. I was just amazed that he didn't have formal training (or at least they never mentioned him having training). The two performances on BGT I saw on the YouTubes were phenomenal.

Actually, he DIDN'T rock, which is what was so refreshing

From what I've read, he's had some formal training (I'm willing to bet just about everone who reaches the finals does) and has sung couple of roles with an amateur opera company.

I'm no fan of opera but Potts was amazing. I've been following the Brit version on the internet.

BTW, if you get the chance, check out the little six year old named Connie singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". It brought the audience to tears and a lump in my throat.

So much for my delusion he just trained to sing opera by practicing at home to CDs.

I saw a blub on TV with his singing and winning moments which gave me chills. They reported he was very in debt prior to this show just doing an everyday job dreaming of being an Opera star. His first gig is to sing for the Queen! After that the sky is the limit....
