That was disappointing. Not only did the one team I didn't want to win, win - they were so clearly going to win early on. So it made for a pretty boring episode overall. In fact, I fast forwarded through a bit of the 2nd half.

Oh well - minus the last episode, overall it was a pretty good season.

Hello from Ketchikan, Alaska everyone. Just finished a wonderful bowl of seafood chowder, and was checking out this thread to see who won. Sounds like a quick clean-out of the DVR when we get home. No need. To waste time watching this one.

The was such an obvious winner's edit that I was going the entire time, No, No, No not DANA.

I must say that that was the best behaved and nicest I have ever seen Dana behave on this show, if she had been like that the entire season no one would have hated her as much as they did.

So glad for Sheri and Cole, bravest, and nicest team ever.

Does anyone know what 2nd and 3rd plce finishers get as a reward?

The only figures I can find are really old (like season 6 or something). I would think that 2nd place would get more than $25,000 now, but maybe not.

Not sure. But the top prize hasn't changed so maybe that amount is still right for second place?

Regarding the leaping challenge -Sheri said in a talking head segment in the show that they moved the clue closer after each failed attempt.

In the early seasons the top prize was only half a million. Had that already changed by season 6?

Re: 5/13 TAR 28 Episode 12 Show Discussion West Coast**Spoilers**

This is from an article written in 2005 from comments Aaron from season 6 made:

    Winner, $1,000,000
    Runner-up, $25,000
    3rd $10,000
    4th $7,000
    5th $6,000
    6th $5,000
    7th $4,000
    8th $3,500
    9th $3,000
    10th $2,500
    11th $1,500

Remember the players also pay a gift tax to the IRS on their winnings and only take home about 60% of their winnings.

    This means:

    Winner, $600,000
    Runner-up, $15,000
    3rd $6,000
    4th $4,200
    5th $3,600
    6th $3,000
    7th $2,400
    8th $2,100
    9th $1,800
    10th $1,500
    11th $900

and this is then split in two.

Cole probably let Sheri have his half as it seems she needs the money for their college educations.

However you get to travel the world for free and when you are eliminated you get to stay in a house with the other contestants until the filming is over.

Plus those coming in first along the way, they won quite a few nice prizes.

Remember also that the contestants need to be free for filming over the course of the 4-5 weeks of production, plus the audition rounds. And they don't get compensated for their time off of work. That's probably why early seasons had so many people who described their jobs as actors/models, and why people who are professional YouTube stars or otherwise looking for exposure are most likely to try out. Most gainfully employed people would be hard-pressed to get that kind of time off on short notice and still have a job waiting for them when they get back.

Of course, this is hardly unique to TAR; most 'reality TV' shows are like that. But you get the sense that the competitors on TAR, with a few exceptions, aren't necessarily doing this for the money. There are far easier ways to take home a paycheque. TAR contestants tend to be more fame-seekers looking for exposure, travelaholics looking for adventure, or people viewing the experience of the race itself as its own ultimate reward.
