There was a woman on the Australian version who decided to wear high heels and heavy makeup for the race.

Makeup I could see, remember the goths? But the high heels? That would just be silly given how physical the race can be.

I can't speak for the youtube guys, but as much as Rachel's been on TV, I've yet to see her dress any other way. I think that's just how she is.

The booty shorts and athletic knee socks were ridiculous, on both the youtube guy AND Rachel.
Those two in particular (and many other TAR contestants in general) aren't dressing to travel the world. They're dressing that way to perform in front of cameras around the world. Even Cord and Jet are putting on a costume by wearing their cowboy hats no matter what. It's perhaps the one thing about the race that never has sat all that well for me. But it's part and parcel of the race to pick something iconic that you can wear to stand out on teevee...

If I were ever to go on the race, all my shirts would have F.O.R.T on them.

Didn't she also wear a miniskirt and a string, and then fell face first down into the mud, baring it all?

Sometimes I wonder if teams choose matching shirts, hats or whatever also so they can spot each other quickly if they should happen to get separated. Some of the places they end up in, not to mention the trains, airports etc., can get pretty hectic and crowded. I should think it would also help the camera teams assigned to the competitors too. And, of course, some of them are promoting certain places, ideas etc.--the Kentucky shirts on Bopper and Mark and the Team Brenchel shirts (since they seem to make their living bouncing from one reality tv show to the next), for example. The Cowboys may wear the hats for a similar reason, though there are certain hardcore cowboy/ranchers who wear their hats (and boots) pretty much everywhere, regardless. Weddings, funerals, brandings...it doesn't much matter.

Yes. And her boyfriend was like 7 years younger. The fact that she looked a bit older than she was didn't help. A couple of the other races mistakenly referred to them as "the mother and son".
