I think it is the combination of the two that caused the problem. If "respect" had been given at the B-52 site then I bet the song would have gone unnoticed. It is the combination of the two without any respect for the people that died in the Vietnam war that probably caused the issue.

I guess it's the fact that I'm Canadian, but the whole controversy in Vietnam didn't even hit my radar. I was watching this one saying to myself "I can't wait to go there! Look, Pho soup!!" Such a beautiful, amazing country.

I have a soft spot for hockey players, so I like that team as well as the roller derby moms.

One of my FB friends is Canadian, and had the same reaction as you did. No problem. I did enjoy the challenge of finding the right poster (the song was superfluous and they could have avoided some of the controversy by leaving it out . . . or at least the translation), and I thought the food challenge and trying to place the people correctly was also interesting. I can be objective, but not in the face of blatant propaganda and showing a trophy that represents the death of American servicemen.

If I live to be 100, I'll never understand why SOMEONE in a production planning meeting didn't look at the B-52 and say, "Guys . . . this is a BAD idea."

No, never hit mine either. Although Mr M said the song was stupid.

And in two of the cases I recall - Hiroshima and Auschwitz - they did a REFLECTION of what happened there. Out of those two - Hiroshima was US attacking Japan with a nuclear bomb which killed many people. It ended the war but at a great cost of life of all kinds. Auschwitz too was Germany attacking its own people simply because they weren't Aryan. And there are some who blame US for the amount of deaths in those concentration/extermination camps because we ignored the few who managed to escape and give us the information.

But they still stayed and remembered and learned. Here - they just went to the stop, decided if they wanted to U-Turn people and were told to go to a pit stop. They didn't pause and reflect there - so it was almost an insult to injury so to speak.

I agree. They usually show each team paying respect. And as was mentioned up thread, I was uncomfortable as soon as I saw the flags... and the picture of their dear emperor. :p

as far as the song goes I kind of found it disrespectful of an American tv show to caption it because I found it mocking. Much like there are all those Internet memes of Kim Jong Un. This is youngsters singing what they believe (whether we believe it is right or not). They were all born after the war, into this regime and know no different. If we just watched them sing without knowing that they were glorifying socialism instead of critically taking the translated version of their song to heart it would have been different.

That's what bothers me a lot. Who thought that was a "good" idea? Maybe someone born long after the war with none of the memories that many of us carry? And who doesn't have any relatives who were in the war and/or affected by it? If so, why didn't someone else notice what a bad idea it was?

Production can't all be 18 year olds, can they?
