Re: 3/24 TAR 22 Episode 6 **West Coast Spoilers**

    Other insights from tonight:

    1. I'm glad Chuck and Wynonna made the most - at least one leg - of their reprieve from what should've been their elimination last week (as Phil made it VERY clear that they were in the race only because Dave and Connor had to drop out). It was also glad to see her do a challenge - it wasn't super-difficult and she did relatively well though she did try to accidentally kill the scorpion by how she was digging. I can't fault her though - I'd be scared to get stung by a scorpion - I mean how do they KNOW this scorpion isn't a fatal kind?

    2. The fellow on team YouTube sadly showed a stereotype - and I hated seeing that - by being so jumpy about the scorpions. He's over the top yeah, but he tends to stay focused and not do this. Yeah, one can be scared but screaming like a girl doesn't help anyone's mood.

    3. So carbon dioxide knocks out scorpions (or oxygen deprivation) - which is what we saw with them putting them in their mouth. Interesting thing to see.

    4. I liked how they made the bushman a part of almost all the leg, and I especially liked how Chuck and Wynonna used a more universal gesture of respect by doing a handshake. I don't think many understood the high fives or the hand slapping of good job. I do however give kudos to the teams that made sure to acknowledge their fellow colleagues in this leg.

    5. Even I knew setting a trap has a bit better odds of getting done faster than the fire. It's easier to set up several traps in the time it can take to set a fire. They were focused more on lighting the guy's pipe than they were with the fact you had to START a fire from scratch.

    6. I wish it was an elimination round - Max and Katie showed their ugly side again here with the rude comments about the Bushmen (like Katie doesn't probably stink herself in this leg?) Kinda glad they have to do a speedbump to see if they can really prove their smack talk.

    7. The country singer who did the roadblock... Um, I'm sorry, but lions CAN kill you. If you see bushmen climbing a tree - just humor them and climb it. We'd rather not see you mauled - these guys are NOT Simba or Mufasa. They act more like Scar if they see you as a danger.

Those B52s dropped 20,000 tons of bombs on Hanoi during the Christmas 1972 raids and killed 1,000 civilians, many of whose relatives are alive today. It's not like our hands are clean. I agree that the visit to the memorial should have been treated more seriously and somberly, and it maybe didn't need to be in the show at all. I suspect that the producers -- some of whom might not be Americans -- picked it without much thought just because they knew the taxi drivers could find it. The song gave us an insight into how children are indoctrinated in their country, not much different from our kids singing "The Star Spangled Banner" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" (imagine what Vietnamese kids might make of our "By the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air...." and "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord..."). I think it's valuable to be reminded that the rest of the world doesn't see us the way we see ourselves.

After reading some things on the internet, it seems people were perhaps more upset over the song the children were singing about the glories of communism. I did not read the subtitles while they were doing it. I'm too lazy for that. lol But I can see where the song would be offensive to the soldiers who fought against communism in that war. Last week I defended the visit to the plane because it showed a part of history that needs to be remembered. Now that I've read about the song, I see why people would be upset. None of the contestants knew what the song was, but the producers certainly did. That coupled with the downed American plane really touched a lot of nerves and understandably so especially since the photo behind the children was of Ho Chi Men, the communist dictator who the Americans fought against.

I like the comparison someone on another forum made:

It would be like taking a Japanese game show to the site of the American internment camps and then having children sing anti-Japanese songs before going to the camp.

While I do think showing things such as the downed plane help give visuals to the stuff covered in history classes the same way former POW camps, concentration camps, and other sites of war tragedy do, I think combining that with socialist propaganda praising the man who everyone on the UN side considered evil was crossing the line.

it seems that that was all for show and drama. The other 2 bush men didn't climb the tree. And what about the cameraman and sound guy, shouldn't they be climbing the tree too? It was a setup.

Thank you stupid basketball for creating a 45 minute delay and I only calculated 30 minutes on my VCR. Who knew basketball was worst than football for screwing up taping schedules. I had to wait until CBS posted online to catch the last 15 minutes of last nights episode. Then I was overjoyed to see "They stink" Katie be in last place and hopefully be eliminated and what happens it is a NEL. Rats!

Hope Roller Derby Moms learn to read by next episode and Winona learns how to steer a boat.

I did feel a little sorry for them in the safari plane, though. Yes, girls, even hicks from Arkansas know that The Lion King was a cartoon. That was just rude to say something. Chuck is such a nice guy, he might have been trying to make a joke. And I will say that Wynona at least handled the scorpion challenge much better than YouTuber. I wish that scorpion had bitten him.
Wynona did the first one where they had to smash the sand castles and look for the clue underneath....

Chuck and Wynona are so much more respectful of this opportunity than Max and Katie. I am so glad they pulled out a good showing last night. Chuck was just being cute and excited to be flying over animals and the Roller Derby moms were mocking him for saying it was where they made the Lion King. I am glad he had the chance to do such a tailor made challenge (possibly producer driven to help them gain momentum).

Boo to Katie for complaining about the smell of the bushmen. Perhaps they should have sent overseas for deodorant in anticipation of her arrival? Just who the heck does she think she is? She's a villian, but not a fun one, just a yucky one.

I had to laugh at Pam and Winnie, racing through the desert with the bushmen the back of the car, saying that it felt like the were smuggling bushmen. Pretty funny.

Beg to differ I have read Phil's accounts of how they set up challenges and it is months in advance and the film crew and production crew races ahead of teams to get everything set up correctly. The original producers go around the world finding new places to go and challenges to do they are on a pretty tight schedule and do not have the freedom to improvise a challenge for any team much less in the middle of the Kalahari Desert.

OK I didn't know which is why I said possibly. At any rate I am glad it worked to the advantage of people I feel are appreciative of the experience.
