    TAR in the media

    Found some interesting recent TAR stuff. I should give credit where it is due. I found these links while reading some posts on another forum, but knew there'd be fans here that would like to read them too. Enjoy!

    http://www.usatoday.com/life/televis...ing-race_x.htm
    Key points--
    * Phil senses "renewed interest" in TAR. That bodes well for potential future seasons as long as TAR5 does well.
    * It implies that the Emmy win helped bring TAR5. We've assumed it helped, but I wonder if this means it was *THE* factor that brought it back?
    * "...same squabble-free format" & "...won't become more ... mean despite stories to the contrary ... I don't think we'd ever want to do that ... I don't think that's the show's strength".

    Rob (or Brennan, I cannot remember which) (TAR1 winners) are the ones that provided this link on the other forum. One (or both?) of them is involved in the Reality Central TV station that (may?) exist someday soon, so they probably have some good connections. And they said something like "they love TAR". I read that as those involved in making this new mag are pro-TAR, so there should be some good coverage.
    This is a new magazine (not online, but the actual kind you touch and feel) about all things reality.
    From the webpage--
    * Several mentions of TAR (including TAR5) on the webpage
    * Available January 13
    * Pick it up at your local supermarket, Barnes & Noble, Blockbuster or Wal-Mart $2.99 US/ $3.99 CAN
    I plan to look for it at one of those places and probably try it out.

    A DVD review of Big Brother 3 now on DVD. However the reviewer makes two mentions of TAR. In the intro paragraph, he mentions reality shows that he likes, one being TAR ("thrilling", "educational"). Then closer to the end of his review he says "Hopefully, CBS's 'Amazing Race' will be next to hit DVD."

    And I went to Blockbuster and Barnes & Noble...both didn't even know what i was talking about...

    Got my copy of Reality Check magazine

    Well, the "Reality Check" magazine that I had found mentioned elsewhere and then I posted about it here-------it actually does exist. Sonic-TARmaniac, you mentioned not finding it at Blockbuster or B&N, and I've read elsewhere that people were having some difficulties locating it. Some had success at WalMart and/or Target.

    I got mine at WM a few nights ago. They only have about 28million different magazines there, but if you look hard enough you'll find it.

    Let me start by saying it is definitely worth the $2.69 I paid. And just so you know, right on the front cover it says "Display until date 2/23/04", so there should still be plenty of time to RACE (or stroll TAR4 Dave/Steve) out and get a copy.

    TAR-wise (which is why I got it) it is not earth-shattering (just very, very good), but it's better than the paragraph here and there that we normally get anywhere else.

    It's a "regular sized" magazine, just a little thinner than most. Although I was thinking it may only end up with 20-30 pages at most, it actually has 48.

    Now, here is a TAR-centric summary of what you'll find WHEN you go get it...

    (I abbreviate Bertram Van Munster as "BVM" throughout)

    * TAR is not mentioned until P13, so be patient if you are reading this thing cover-to-cover.
    * P13 ("So you want to be a reality TV star..." article), casting in general is mentioned by BVM.
    * P14 ("2004 Previews" article). TAR5 has 3 paragraphs. TAR2's Alex has a paragraph for his show about chefs. And, finally among the photos in this article is one of Phil. For whatever reason, he is jumping in the air, arms spread wide, legs kicked up behind, and mouth open like he's screaming. I don't know what that's all about???
    * P16 (same article continued). Phil's NOW! show has 3 paragraphs. And there is a sidebar about the Reality Central TV network, and in it they mention TAR1's Rob/Brennan, TAR2's Blake and Chris/Alex. In addition there are pictures of TAR1's Brennan and TAR2's Blake.
    * P19 ("Gays and Reality TV: Too Real, or Not Real Enough?" article). TAR4's Chip/Reichen mentioned. BVM talks.
    * P20 (same continued). BVM talks some more.
    * P20/21 ("We're Here, We're Queer...So What?" article). TAR4's Chip/Reichen have an entire article in Q&A format. There are also 3 photos. One is one of their promotional CBS photos (is Reichen flipping us off?), one is with Phil at The Emmys, the other is during their Race (I haven't looked closely at it, but it could be from Milan, because they are holding something that says "6:00 AM" on it, which is the bus time that they got if I remember right).

    *** P22-24 (a full THREE-PAGE TAR article !!!!!!!) ***
    Again, this is a Q&A format. With BVM and EliseD and Phil. There are 8 photos, as follows...
    1. Start of TAR2 all teams running across the NV/CA desert. Note Chris/Alex started out in the lead and finished in the lead.
    2. Phil in a parka of sorts beating on a drum of sorts. Can't place this off the top of my head.
    3. BVM with some ladies from the Venice masquerade (I think anyway). Can't tell if this is a natural photo, or a cut-n-paste of several photos.
    4. TAR2 Detour where they had to either dance for tips or carry fish. The teams you can see are getting dressed for the dancing, Gary/Dave, Wil/Tara, and Oswald/Danny.
    5. A shot of BVM and his (in my opinion quite attractive) wife EliseD. Location unknown--if I had to guess and pick a TAR locale, I'd say south of France at the place where TAR4's Josh/Steve were eliminated.
    6. BVM with some other crew members scouting out the TAR4 Dodger Stadium locale.
    7. TAR3's Teri/Ian reading what must be the instruction book for their Kodak Easy Share camera. Although the caption refers to their venture to Vietnam, this is almost surely a shot of them in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where they had to take pictures at the Petronas Towers.
    8. Not really a photo, just the TAR logo (blue background).

    * Then just when you think that might be all if you are continuing to read cover-to-cover, they begin to get several mentions again starting on page 38.
    * P38/39 ("How 'Real' Is Reality TV?" article). The show itself is mentioned two times and TAR4's Chip/Reichen are mentioned two times.
    * P40/41 ("15 1/2 minutes" article). TAR2's Chris/Alex are mentioned. TAR2's Blake is mentioned. TAR3's Flo/Zach are mentioned. And, a photo of TAR2's Alex is included (with a chef from his show).
    * P42 ("Gone, But Not Forgotten..." article). The following are mentioned. TAR1's Drew/Kevin, TAR1's Rob/Brennan, TAR3's JohnVito/Jill, and TAR3's Teri/Ian.

    We (TAR) are thankfully absent from the articles--
    * "When reality shows become horror shows" (accidents, injuries, etc.) Although we did have an asthma attack or two, a bloodied lip, and a bum knee in this last season. Guess those stories don't rank up there with falling into a fire.
    * "Fashion Rap". No Racers, good or bad.
    * "Real Scandals". Removals from shows, arrests, what seems to me like an awfully lot of DUI/DWI offenses, and other sordid contestant stuff.

    And, as if all of this TAR stuff weren't enough to have you out picking up a copy or two, here is some other (less important ) stuff that is included. These are other than what I've already mentioned above.
    * A Clay Aiken "poster" inside the front/back cover.
    * 3-pages of Fear Factor
    * "Can you be a porn star?". Self-explanatory, I think.
    * 4-pages of Survivor
    * 2-pages of Clay Aiken
    * 2-pages of Rupert ("Blackbeard")
    * 3-pages of Extreme Makeover
    * 3-pages of Big Brother
    * 3-pages of Bachelor/ette

    And, oh yeah,...
    * a full page ad for Soap Opera Weekly (the publisher of Reality Check also does Soap Opera Digest)

    And, the only paid advertisement in the whole thing,...
    * a full page ad for Chef Boyardee Deep Dish Meals.

    So, if you like the magazine, be sure to choose Chef Boyardee next time you're looking for something they sell. Then email them and let them know why! Not only mention the magazine, but TAR specifically! Never know who it'll get to.

    Thanks, TAR4 ATC Dave and TAR4 ATCSteve!

    Thats a great article!!! I always wondered what they did with the money... if they invested or just blew it all in a mad shopping spree.

    Thanks sweeper for the bankrate.com article. Interesting. It was very TAR-filled. The mentions of the TAR people were very detailed. Then they just sort of passively mentioned the others it seemed.

    Although I'd already picked up my copy from WalMart earlier, I did see the "Reality Check" magazine when I was in Blockbuster this weekend, so I know it's in at least one BB although some people have complained about not being able to find it.

    Also, for anyone that gets the Kansas City Star newspaper. In this past Saturday (Jan 31) in the "fyi" section, there was quite a bit about All-Star Survivor. But, there was also an article about "non-Survivor All-Stars". It mentioned several former reality TV personalities. The one they mentioned from TAR was TAR1's Bill and Joe (aka Team Guido). The author of the article also runs a website and the article is posted there also.

    The online version lacks pictures. In the newspaper there was a picture along with each person mentioned.

    I just bought the mag yesterday at food lion.

    I don't know how often it comes out, but it seemed rather old already (they didn't even know who had won Celebrity Poaker).

    It did mention changes for TAR though, including the fact that no ine in TAR5 was allowed to have a map
