Remember in TAR4, episode 3 when they passed through Vienna, Austria. The RoadBlock that episode involved bungee jump from Danube Tower (Donauturm).
Well, the company that operates that bungee jump apparently had an accident at another of their locations.
This is from a publication, I believe it may be called "F.A.Z. Weekly", from Friday, July 25, 2003.
Several days ago I found this mentioned right on the company's own website. Today when I went to find it again to post it here, it was gone. Apparently they have now removed their message and have resumed their bungee operations. So, I searched the internet and found the above article.Broken rope costs bungee jumper his life
DORTMUND. Police and prosecutors have called in a materials specialist to investigate why an elastic rope broke and caused what officials said was Germany’s first-ever bungee-jumping death. The bungee jumper, a 31-year-old man from the town of Mommenheim, near Mainz, died instantly on Sunday when he hit the ground after diving from a platform at the 160-meter (525-foot) level of a 212-meter television tower in Dortmund’s Westfalen Park. An employee sustained minor injuries when the rope whipsawed back to the platform, which an investigator said was one of the highest in Europe for bungee jumping. Investigators said the victim, identified only as Thorsten B., weighed about 110 kilograms (232 lbs.) and appeared to have followed all safety procedures. The owner, Jochen Schweitzer, said the fatal jump was the 108th with a latex rope approved for 200 jumps. He said he would close all five of his bungee-jumping facilities in Germany and Austria until experts can clarify why the rope, which is made of thousands of individual strands, broke. That could take several weeks, a police spokesman said on Tuesday
Bungee deaths and accidents are very rare from what I understand. And although TAR goes to lengthy precautions to assure the safety during the Races, this just shows what dangers the Racers face.
