There's an article that sounds pretty negative from the title, but is actually positive and pretty dead-on in my opinion.

But it still feels as if it has a purity missing in more deviously staged reality games. And part of the appeal of the show is seeing people who are not young, not pretty -- in other words, not likely to join the cast of Friends -- as they try to out-perform people who devote daily hours to exercising ferociously.
Those regular folks, who are also in the current cast, become the surrogates for most viewers. (Haven't you noticed how quickly audiences begin to hate model-pretty players in reality games, especially when they win?)
