The Malaysian people actually gave help to Mirna, she didn't ask for it. I should've put my fav. team as first place. Oh well.

Look at it practically. The kids are simply reacting to seeing someone they've seen on T.V. (TAR has played there, I've definitely read that). It might not necessarily be fandom as much as simple fascination--especially with the little person.

Meanwhile Danielle uses her own... er... weapons... to get help as well, even if not as much as she'd hoped. She must be a Dirty Hooker for trying to do that!
