I think instead of trips for first since they seem to go to the same people raise the prize money for 2nd place on down up so that the teams all get more than a pittance at the end besides the winner. If C&C win the million, they pretty much win everything.

There's no specific rule that it's the racers have to take the trip as a team. I think one of the TAR 3 teams did something like that with the trip they won; it's in one of the interviews here.

CBS most likely doesn't pay a dime for those trips. They are provided by American Airlines for the publicity/advertising. So, it's not about being able to afford it or not.

Absolutely. The amount of trips throughout the race depends on how many the airline companies, cruise companies, hotel companies, etc can afford. I'd love for the first place team to get a trip every time, but hey, this is the real world.
