Damn Train Finale Recap PART TWO

So, here we are at the last hour of The Amazing Race 6, and I for one think that the show absolutely lived up to its title once again.

If you haven’t yet read part One of the Finale Recap you can find it HERE. If you have, then I hope you enjoy Part Two:

The Particulars

Teams will be heading back to the United States. Their first stop is Honolulu Hawaii, but they must purchase the tickets from a travel agent or on line as local laws prohibit the purchase of international flight tickets at the actual airport.

Once in Hawaii they must drive themselves to Puu Ualakaa State Park and find the overlook where the next clue box is waiting.

That clue is for the final Detour of the race. Teams must make the choice between Outfits which will send them ten miles away to a clothing distributor. At the warehouse they will see dressed mannequins. The teams must search through tens of thousands of articles of clothing until they find the matching outfits. Once they bring them to the warehouse guy, he will give them the next clue. If the teams opt for the other detour choice of Outrigger, they must drive 6 miles then paddle a canoe, with the help of a steersman, a little over 2 miles where the next clue will be given to them.

The clue teams receive after the detour directs them to drive to Kamaka Air for the final Roadblock. The team member who performs the task must be ready for an ocean bath. He or she will be skydiving in tandem with an instructor. The plane will fly them 11,000 feet up, and they will be parachuting to a sandbar in the ocean where the other team member and the next clue will be waiting.

That clue sends teams to the Final city in the race. Teams will drive to the airport, then hop a flight to Chicago (home of FORTCON I) Illinois. Once there the players must find the water tower for the next clue.

After leaving the water tower they need to taxi to Gino’s East Pizzeria and each eat half a deep-dish pizza. Once the pizza is finished the wait staff will hand them the final clue sending them to Ping Tom Memorial Park and the million dollars… if they get there first.

And they’re off:

Kris and Jon 5:27am

They go to the hotel to try to book the flight to Hawaii, but the business center is still closed. Having no luck calling travel agents they decide to just go to one and book tickets that way. Unfortunately language barriers prevent them from being able to book the flight, so they have to head back to the hotel. Once there the business center is open, and they manage to get a flight to Hawaii that connects in Tokyo.

When they land in Tokyo they try to get an earlier flight, but have no luck doing so as the only earlier flight has but one seat.

In Hawaii they have no problem getting to the first clue and although Kris wants to paddle the canoe, Jon is concerned about both the light rain and the 2 mile course, so the couple opt for Outfits instead.

At the warehouse Kris is very methodical in her approach to finding the matching patterns as jon pulls out rack after rack of clothing.. They put the shirt and dress on and the warehouse guy gives them the clue. They either skipped the part where he told them they could keep the clothes, or Jon and Kris stole themselves a couple of cute outfits.

They have no problems getting to Kamaka Air and because Kris has already done six of the Roadblocks it’s up to Jon to make the jump.

He truly enjoys himself, and Kris has a blast standing on the sandbar waiting for him to land.

They head off for the airport and go to the American Airlines counter. Once there they ask a couple of times if the American Airlines flight is absolutely the earliest flight they can get. They are assured it is, so they book the tickets and head off for Chicago.

On the plane they learn that there was indeed an earlier flight, but since the plane is landing 15 minutes early they are hopeful that they can catch up.

It seems as though luck is still on their side as have no problem getting on the train to the city. Unfortunately they do seem to have a bit of a problem finding the water tower.

Once they do, they are pleased to be heading to Gino’s East Pizzeria so early in the morning and giggle at the thought of having deep dish pizza for breakfast. They scarf down the pizza and Kris follows it up with half a soda as they are simultaneously thanking the wait staff for the clue and heading out the door.

They hail a cab and he knows exactly how to get to Ping Tom Memorial Park. He drops them off by the first flag and the couple starts running. They come to a train track just as the train is coming by and they have to wait while the slow ass train rambles by. Once the bar raises they run again, following the flags to the Final Pit Stop where this great team arrives…

Freddy and Kendra 6:46am

They start this final leg with Kendra telling us that she’s not going to be nice and sweet anymore.

Ummm… Kendra who?

The couple tries to call a travel agent from the hotel lobby, but can’t get through to any of them. They wait for the Business Center to open and get tickets booked to Hawaii via Osaka. They have barely enough time to get to the airport before the flight to Japan takes off.

Once in Osaka they search for earlier flights to Hawaii and find one, but policy prohibits the ticket agent from selling them a ticket. Kendra starts to cry saying she has a sick child in Hawaii and has to get to her.

One day that bit of Karma will come bite you in the butt honey.

Once in Hawaii they have no problems locating the first clue and quickly opt for Outrigger as their choice of Detour.

In the canoe Freddy gets upset because Kendra splashes him with acid. Oh wait. It was water, my bad. He then gets upset because she is waving to people instead of paddling. Somehow, even with all the splashing and waving they manage to finish the course and get the next clue.

Freddy drives the car, but misses the turn for Kamaka Air, and the couple spends a while trying to get back on track.

Once at the Roadblock it has to be Freddy as he is the team member who has not done six of them yet. He is thrilled with the task and has a great time jumping out of the plane. Kendra seems to enjoy watching from the boat, and gives him a big hug when he brings her the next clue.

At the airport Freddy and Kendra go to the United counter and inquire about all the possible flights to Chicago. The ticket agent tells them about the American Flight, but tells them it lands later.

In Chicago they get to the water tower in record time and Kendra, who claims to be starving… really honey after all that poverty you witnessed do you really think you were starving? Anyway… Pardon my digression, she claims to be able to eat an entire pizza and assures Freddy that eating half of one will be easy.

She gets through the first piece pretty well, but halfway through the second (and final) piece she starts gagging and coughing and burping. Freddy is trying to encourage her, but he really sucks at that and it only serves to upset her more. She finally manages to get the rest of it down and they get the next clue.

Outside of the pizzeria they hail a cab, but the driver doesn’t know where Ping Tom Memorial Park is. Freddy decides that flagging down a cop and claiming an emergency is a good idea… until the cop asks him what the emergency is. Freddy stumbles a bit as Kendra is yelling that you can’t tell that to a cop. Freddy apologizes mumbling about being in a race and backs away from the car.

In the cab the driver has called his dispatcher, but is getting nowhere so Freddy asks to speak with the guy himself. The cabbie hands him the phone and WOW even when Freddy says it the dispatcher doesn’t know where it is. After driving for a while longer they see another cab from a different company. Freddy hops out and asks him if he knows. Out of luck Freddy.

**MUST NOTE that I did not hear Freddy call these cabbies dumb asses even once for not knowing where to go, yet in every other country the cabbies where complete idiots if they couldn’t find a place.

I suppose they found the place by accident as the next thing I know they see the flags marking the start of the run to the mat. They hop out and run as fast as they can, arriving…

Adam and Rebecca 11:20am

Who? Where were they in this hour?

When leaving the Pit Stop they acknowledge that they are behind, but know that if they can catch up one time, they are right back in it.

They get a flight to Hawaii vie Osaka, and like the teams above, they too tried to get an earlier flight. When it became apparent that there was no way the on again/off again couple were getting a better flight Rebecca backed away resigned to the flight they already had. Adam decided it would be a good idea to harass the ticket agent and started telling her how mean she was. She was a big fat meanie there Mr. Adam… not letting you get on that flight. Go hold your breath in the corner.

Once in Hawaii they quickly opt for Outrigger as their choice in the Detour and seem to fly down river with no problems.

At Kamaka Air they are the only team that gets to choose who will perform the Roadblock due to the use of a Fast Forward earlier in the game. It will be Adam, and even though Rebecca wanted to do it, she seems happy that Adam is overcoming so many fears.

He has fun and they are both very proud of him for doing it.

They arrive at the airport and make a flight to Chicago just minutes after getting there... or so editing would have us believe, I really don’t know how long any team was in an airport.

In Chicago they waste no time getting to either the water tower or to Gino’s East Pizzeria. Once there Adam starts complaining that he doesn’t eat tomatoes. Rebecca says she doesn’t eat cheese, but she will and DOES! They manage to finish the pizza and head off for Ping Tom Memorial Park where they spot the flags and run to the Pit Stop where they arrive…

The Pit Stop and ONE MILLION DOLLARS

There they are, all the previous racers lining the last few yards to the raised mat. Here comes the first team, and it’s…

They did it, and I guess I’ll be happy for them. Everyone who has ever read anything I’ve written about the race knows I was really routing for:

They ran a beautiful race and I was thrilled to watch them. And then there’s

Rebecca kicked butt the entire way, and really they were kind of fun to watch.

Cali... As always a wonderful recap. I'd like add that the train stopped Freddy & Kendra as well. It looked like it was waiting there for a team to arrive so it could slow them down for dramatic reasons.

I'm no fan of Adam, but I am extremely impressed that he made it to the finish line. Also, it may have been editing, but he didn't tell his mother that he loved her before jumping out of the plane. Our little boy is all growns up. Yes he is.

Does anyone know if there is a post anywhere indicating at what times the final teams actually arrive at their destinations. I am just wondering how far behind Jon and Kris were behind K and F. Sometimes I think they is actually a larger time gap involved, that is not shown to add drama. I don't mind the drama during the race, but it would be nice to know how close the times actually were after the fact.

That was truly a sad moment. After investing so much in this show we had to watch the evil twits win.

You know, I got stopped by a train on my way home from work today and thought UGGGGGH!

Loved the recap, but hated the ending. Is it too late to do a re-write?
